Review : Animal Crossing : Wild World on Nintendo DS
For the past couple days I have been playing Animal Crossing : Wild World for the Nintendo DS.
Animal Crossing is sort of a weird game. It is an interactive simulation of a bright and cheery real-time cartoon town that is inhabited by cute and friendly animal people that you talk to, trade stuff with and it is all done in real time based on the internal clock on your game system. It is sort of like a MMORPG but off-line or Grand Theft Auto : San Andreas but without all the violence, cars, gangsters and hookers. It is a sort of a non-linear game that is sort of an interactive ambient puzzle than a competitive traditional game. In the game you move to the town and you perform odd jobs, fish and pick fruit to raise money to play off your house, decorate your house and buy crap in general.
This is actually the third Animal Crossing game. The first was on the N-64 and only came out in Japan, the next was on Gamecube and then this version fits perfectly on the Nintendo DS system.
Animal Crossing has a real shared gameplay environment. You create your player and live in your house but you log on to a shared multi-user town on one card. You can have multiple people use the same game but each with their own "Log on" player and what you do in one game is carried over into the others. So if you plant a tree, chop down a tree or paint a giant penis on your friends front door the next person to play that copy of the game will notice it when they play. It should be especially cool to see multiple kids in the same household take advantage of this.
The game take place in real time so when it is December 19th in real life it is December 19th in the game. The environment, rains, snows and the sun rises and sets all based on the time you play the game. When you stop playing the game for a while the characters in the town lament that they have not seen you for a while. It is a game that is not meant to be played for a giant marathon session but rather for a couple days for short times each day. Oh yeah there is a store that closes at 11:00 PM so you actually have to get your game playing in before it gets too late or you are out of luck. I know it is supposed to be cute but it is Nintendo's way of making sure that you don't stay up to late in real life.
You can use the wireless networking to visit another town and chew the cud with your friend's town or there is Nintendo WFC online gameplay where you can register a friend code and play over the internet. However there is no way to meet random people over the Nintendo WFC. You have to have your friend code, email it to your friend and then both log on at the same time and enter each other friend code in order to meet online. That is a bit of a hassle and if I made things I would have a place where you could actually meet random people online and then go over and check out their town but I guess that Nintendo is worried about kids meeting strange people via a video game so they made it quite hard to pull off.
The graphics are cute and well done but looks like a N-64 game. The world in this game is especially round and you see the curvature of the world as you walk around the town.
It is sort of like an RPG but there is no real quest and sort of like a Hello Kitty version of The Sims. I sort of consider this more like a puzzle game. Overall this is a totally relaxing game. You don't play it to get your adrenaline up but quite the opposite. This is a great example about how Nintendo can use innovation and creativity to create a unique and fun game. It it sort of a weird parody of the rat race and it can be quite soothing. It is great for kids, great for girls and a very different but strangely entertaining game experience.

I love how some GAF members whine about software like AC... I mean, AC is quite the relaxing game when you're out and about and it works better as a portable game than it does as a Gamecube game.
That said, I'm still waiting for the revolution version. I suspect it'll be online as well.

Me and wife are so hooked on the original Animal Crossing. Buh-leeve me, we were debating muchly whether to buy a DS solely so we could play this version. In the end, we figured we'd have to buy 2 DSes and 2 carts to play it. So we'll wait until we can afford it.
