Please. Think of the Nerds
Copyright law was best described as "a balance between expression that the owners can control and expression that is left open to the commons."
Right now we are facing the complete destruction of that delicate balance. Corporations, and their congressional lap dogs, are doing everything in their power to ensure that the "expression left open to the commons" is forever removed, leaving only "expression the owners can control."
That is a truly terrifying statement, which bears repeating: "expression only the owners can control." - Wil Wheaton
We need to decide what vision of the future that we want our digital rights to represent. Who's vision of the future do we want to to live in? George Orwell, Bill Gates, Rupert Murdoch, or William Gibson? Besides Wil Wheaton agrees with me in thinking the EFF is keen.
Freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of choice and right to privacy will evolve into what you can do with computers and other digital technologies. It is not just nerds that will be affected but every man woman and child in this country.
This Saturday I am taking part in the Blogathon for the EFF. If you like your digital freedoms and privacy I suggest you learn what the EFF is all about and give five bucks or so.
I currently have $240 in pledged donations including hundred bucks that I personally laid out. My parents might chip in another fifty. But you the readers of this site has matched my donation and then some.
I don't have banner ads, I don't have text ads, I don't sell personal information, I don't spam, I don't beg for cash every post and I don't have popup ads.
What I would like to do is to help a cause that effects our freedoms to use these incredible digital technologies. In twenty to thirty years print and analog media will not matter that is why the laws that we choose now are so important.
Think of the kids... think of the nerds.. think of what will happen if we do nothing.
Five bucks that is all I am asking

I think of it less of a pledge and more of an investment in a non-stop barrage of weblogging goodness, possibly degenerating into barely cognizant sleep-deprived madness.
