Please Be Careful with Multimedia in Blogs!
I just wanted to say a few brief words on people embedding multimedia elements including but not limited to Quicktime, Flash, MP3 Audio, Real, Windows Media and Java in a weblog or sites that do not usually have multimedia elements.
For the love of God do not have it auto play so all I have to do is load a site to have it play is to load the site's URL.
If you do not normally serve multimedia content warn your viewer by having it linked or on a page that is not on the main index.
I like to open up a whole bunch of websites at once using a bunch of bookmarked tabs in Mozilla Firefox and it just plain sucks when one starts bleeping away at some jingle or flashing monkey animation.
I like audio, and video files as much as the next guy and i have been working with multimedia since before HyperCard but don't make me get all Jakob Nielsen on your ass.
It makes my hair stand on end when I think of the bandwidth costs of serving lots of download heavy multimedia elements on a personal website.

You taught me well.
I still owe you for that.

I agree Jake.
And for the love of God, DO NOT PLAY SOUND ON YOUR WEBSITE! Some of us are at work!
I was reading an article on Forbes and there was some stupid ad showing an investment banker talking. You could not shut him up! I just left the site and went somewhere else.

Well I think sound is OK as long as you make it optional by having sound files available to download or stream but if you have them automatically playing then it is rude. Unless you are a music site or something like that.
