Phear the Firefox

Get Firefox For the past two days I have been using the new Mozilla Firefox 0.8 and I have been loving every freaking moment of it.

First and foremost in the name change from Firebird to Firefox. You see there were legal naming trademark problems with another software project named Firebird. Ironically it was originally called Phoenix but the name was changed due to legal naming trademark problems with other software projects. So the Mozilla Foundation is going with Firefox and they are sticking with it. They actually said that if the WWF can change names so can they. It also reminds one of the bad 80s Clint Eastwood movie Firefox where he had to steal a super secret soviet jet.

The browser is still as feature rich, powerful, user friendly and freaking fast but it has some new reasons why it is good to upgrade to Firefox.

There is a new more powerful download manager but it can be configured to behave like the old one.

New Windows Installer! This makes installing and upgrading on Windows much easier and quicker. But you will need to install a new copy of the Flash Player. Quicktime, Real and Windows Media do not need new plug-ins installed from Firebird to Firefox.

Improved Bookmark Manager and I love how powerful and easy it is. You can manipulate a huge ass list of bookmarks and whip it into shape in moments.

New spiffy logo and a new Mac OS X specific theme for you Mac OS X users out there.

Better handling of browser extensions. Like more ad blockers and a RSS reader. Even Tetris!

I might choose the Mozilla Foundation for the next Blogathon I like it so much.

There is also a new version of Mozilla Thunderbird but I have yet to upgrade.

If you are still using IE I implore you to reconsider and give Mozilla Firefox a try. For those of you who are now using a Mozilla browser what the hell are you waiting for? Get it now!

I downloaded Thunderbird to replace my Mums computer of Eudora when her PC went belly-up. The next day, it was updated.

I'll give Firefox a whirl eventually. I almost feel sneaky bastard enough to install it on my Mums PC and remove the IE icons from the desktop.

I've been using Firebird since the version 6 series, and have been using Firefox .8 since the release.

Loving every moment of it.

Woo Firefox!

I compare it to yummy chocolate chip cookies. This is Firebird. Then taking the yummy cookie and dunking it in milky silk chocolate and throwing on some sprinkles. And frosting. This is Firefox. Mmm.

I beg to differ. The Web Standards Action Project gave Mozilla their highest review for it's dedication to standard compliance.

No it does not render CSS 100% the same as MSIE but that is not Mozilla's fault.

Actually it is nutscrape's fault....I mean netscape.

Posted by: pete at February 11, 2004 10:17 PM

Dude Netscape does not even exist anymore.

make sure to checkout the tabbrowser extention. you might have to wait for one that works 100% with .8 but you'll crap your pants when you see it.

Really that is quite a feature when it makes you change your under shorts

What I love about firebird, now firefox is that it is completly cross-platform. (same as mozilla) I run it on my FreeBSD workstation, and I have it loaded on my Mac OS X box, and my Windows XP computer. Same brower so that I have the same interface for browsing all on my different platforms. Small, sleak, and runs very fast, and it is just a browser. I love it!

I've been using it since 0.5 when it was Phoenix...
