Phear The Dark Side of the iPod
Last week I got a yearly bonus from work and I had to work some serious overtime. I also filed my tax return online and am expecting my refund next week or so. So I decided that all this work and no play was making me a dull boy.
I had my mind on an Xbox 360 or one of the fifth generation iPods that can play videos and have a phat bright color screen. So far the Xbox 360 really does not have enough good games to get my attention and I am not going to invest that kind of money in a new game system until I see what the PS3 and Nintendo Revolution looks like. I know I am going to get the Nintendo Revolution the minute it goes on sale this November but that is just because I am a life long Nintendo freak and the damn thing looks like a lot of fun. So my mind was full off all things iPod.
So yesterday I did some serious online research and made up my mind. Today I went to a local retailer plunked down my card and went home with a brand new fifth generation Apple iPod that was black as night and sixty freaking gigs of data large. This is exactly ten times the storage space as my iPod Mini.
My lovely girlfriend Kymberly is quite happy to know that she is going to get to use my iPod Mini and she can't wait to load it up with all her music and get a cute case for it.
It took me about three hours to fill it up with every digital music file, digital photo that I took in the last five years, my VoodooPad database, my iCal calendars, my email contacts and two full length DVD movies that I ripped to MP4 and it is not even half way full. This 60 gig monster is only slightly thicker than the 30 gig version, has a longer battery life and is the baddest iPod that Apple has ever conceived. It was 400 but since is better than a hand held DVD player, PDA and cellphone it was worth the investment. This hard drive is larger than most notebook computers and I can see myself extending the life of my iBook by taking this with me on travel instead of taking my iBook everywhere. I am going to be radically consolidating my gadget bag with this bad boy.
I also got a matching black flip top protective leather case from DLO so it would not get messed up. It is a damn shame that it take at least three hours of ripping and encoding to put an DVD movie in a nice iPod ready MP4 format but man is it neat. I can record a TV show off cable, burn it to DVD+RW and then encode it for the iPod so I don't have to pay two bucks to watch a single TV episode.
I will be restarting the weekly Video Podcasts since I now have something that can freaking watch video podcasts the way that Darth Jobs wants it so.
I can't wait to play with this and I'll have a full review later on this week.

Rock on Jake. I'd kill for a 60 Gig IPod video, but I'll have to make due with my 15 Gig Dell DJ.

Well, you said it, they just want your iPod =P
But, you know, in other times you were all linux and Sega Dreamcast, now you're Apple and Nintendo.
Both Tux and Sonic you at you and shake their heads. Baby Chao is crying in heaven (he died... because of... aids).

Hey Mac OSX is a unix. A really well made Linux. I still rock the Sonic games on the Gamecube but if you noticed there has not been any new Dreamcast games as of late.

Also I was down with Nintendo since Donkey Kong came out in the arcade back in the Atari days and my first computer was a Macintosh 128k in 1985.

Well, actually Mac OS X uses a kernel called "Darwin" which is based on the Mach microkernel and FreeBSD's kernel, if I'm not wrong. This kernel is unix-like, just as linux, bsds and stuff.
There have been new games for Sega Dreamcast (official ones) like Radilgy and Under Defeat (shooters), and even Sega is selling some refurbished Dreamcasts in Japan.
However, don't take it seriously, I was joking (more like, I was really bored).

Right and that makes it a Unix based operating system. Unix is more a wider classification rather than a specific animal and not all are created equal.
Mac OSX is a UNIX. I can open up a command prompt and enter UNIX commands.

As I said, it's based on Mach and FreeBSD, which makes it "unix/posix compatible" rather than Unix-based. Unix it's a operating system itself and blah blah. It's a tiny difference. I know Apple advertises Mac OS X as Unix based, but should be "Unix-like" or Unix compatible. As you said, as linux and stuff.
