Now How Am I Going to Operate My Digital Watch?

At this months Weblogger Meetup I got to try out a MSN Direct wireless watch. It was owned by a Microsoft employee who works in the division responsible for it. He also had a 12-inch Tablet PC.

I don't see myself going out and getting one but I was able to figure out the interface by just a few button presses. It was an interesting experience reading AP press articles wirelessly on a watch. They are not small by any definition of the word but they are not as bulky as what I have been lead to believe. I was impressed at how legible the display was and I would not want to read War and Peace on one but I was able to do what I needed. It still cost as much as a PDA at 200 bucks but it's owner attested that he can use it for about a five days without having to recharge the battery That is a bit too much for a watch but if the format survives it should be interesting to see what it is like in a couple years. I let the Microsoftie play with my NeoGeo Pocket while I surfed around on his watch.

I have a ten dollar drugstore no-name generic digital watch. It tells the time and date and that is what I need it to do. I have to wonder what Douglas Adams of The Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy would think of this latest tech gadget out of Redmond WA.

You are a nerd if you get the title of this post.

Aw crap I'm a nerd. Oh wait, I already knew that. Technically I'm a geek.

I'm still not sold on any digital delivery service that sends me news stories to my watch/phone/pda. What news story is so important that I need it know about it right now? IM's I can see, but that's just an extension of SMS or heck just a phone call. I'd rather get a phone call than an IM that I can't answer.

The biggest complaint I've heard about them (besides that the novelty wears off) is that the news stories are so edited that you really don't glean any information from them.

I used to use AvantGo( http://www.avantgo.com ) with my palm PDA alot. It was pretty cool. The great thing about it is that it was almost 100% accurate from the origional source story.

Thanks for letting me try out the NeoGeo and for trying out the watch.

Yeah, I use AvantGo now on my Palm. I've been using JPlucker to pull RSS feeds from the web onto my Palm and read them during my workday commute.
