Notes from my first day of my new Mac

On Saturday I got up early to get to the FedEx place when they opened so I could get my brand new iBook and get catch the ferry to go over to Seattle in time.

Oh man it is so damn cool to use this new iBook.

Sweet my PC USB Thumb Drive just booted up and showed up with no problem or user iteration. I just stuck it in and it worked.

Cool my USB SD/MMC card reader just booted up. I am going to add a bunch of photos to iPhoto. Wow that worked just fine.

So this is Apple Works? I have not seen this program in years. I hope that it works out as a decent word processing program until I get OpenOffice.org set up. Wow this is really lackluster. I need to install OpenOffice.org ASAP. I can't figure out how to get Apple works to go to an on line layout but it is a matter of time before I add OpenOffice.org.

Cool. That worked our sweet. I was able to get a cute picture of one of our kitties covered in Cat nip on my desk top.

I just imported my Mozilla Calendar data into iCal so all my appointment data was carried over.

Good old iTunes. I tell ya. iTunes is one of the reasons why I ended up going back to mac. iTunes for Windows was a Trojan horse style app. No I am not talking about a “Trojan Horse” but one of those apps that make you open your eyes to the current generation of Apple Software.

Added a bunch of MP3s from Windows iTunes onto my Mac.

The feel of the iBook is pure quality. It is almost a zen like design. It is natural to touch and has a feeling of sturdy design and quality. It is almost totally quiet and there is almost no heating on the underside of the unit. It is such a positive alternative to my old PC notebook that sounded like a vacuum cleaner and heated up so much you could fry an egg and heat your coffee on it. it will take me a bit to get used to hitting the Apple Key again.

The interface of OSX is natural. I see the influence of Mac OS Classic and the influences of other Unix systems.

Later on that day on Saturday BBQ and I stopped by a Seattle cyber-cafe and I downloaded a whole bunch of software and updates from my notebook. I am sort of surprised at how easy it is to install and update programs for the Mac. I thought that it would actually be harder and I was surprised at how often I did not need to run an installer.

I am blown away at how natural and stable the iBook feels. I guess I'll use this for a week before writing my review of it. So far I have been nothing but impressed.

Update: Oops I had the comments turned off on that post. I suck.

What size iBook did you pick up and what kind of options?

I got a 14 inch iBook with 768 Megs of RAM a 80 Gig HD and a Superdrive.

I started out a Mac user from 1984 to 2000 and now I am back on the Mac OS. I freaking love it.

I'm on my first Mac and have to say it rocks my socks off. I've used them sparingly whenever possible in the past, due to the general stigma. And the 8.something Mac or whatever I used 4 years ago definitely reinforced the stigma. Decided I would pick one up for school just for the hell of it, rather than a PC. I have to admit to being raised on Windows and being rather fond of Windows until this point. 8 years of time using Windows let me figure all the shortcuts and tricks out. XP isn't terrible, but it ain't great either and it is leagues from stable, secure and useful out of the box, unlike this.

openoffice.org on macintosh stinks.

neoOffice/j is native, but ugly, but works (a little:)

i should have never played with the testdrive for the M$ office suite. it definitely is the best so far. but so far i'm not going to pay for it.

Well I installed both NeoOffice/J and OpenOffice.org under X11 I like both but I do like how better the OS integration is with NeoOffice. I do know that it is a less that 1.0 port of OpenOffice to Mac but it works for now an I like it better than Apple Works.

GIMP for Mac OSX X11 Rocks.
