My Last Post at Analog Modem 56k

Linksys 4 port Router photoI saw that they had Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Routers on sale at Walmart. Now this was on the list of approved and tested routers and it is Unix friendly so decided to go with this. Now this has a four port switch and I have read positive review of this and have been recommended this brand before so it looked like a good choice.

I think I have all the cables and doohickeys I need so when I get hooked up the networking should be quick and easy.

So right now as I type this it is the last time that I am going to be connected to the Internet at 56k. God this is the end of an era. I mean the first time I saw the internet on a high speed connection was during the days of Mosaic 1.0 for Windows 3.1 in my father's lab at WSU. It blew me away back in the days of Prodigy on 2400 Baud modems and the cool kids had 4800 Baud AOL 1.0 accounts. Yes I remember back when AOL was cool!! The first web page I am going to surf is going to be my own and the first game I am going to play is Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 on PS2.

God now I am getting all misty eyed, and I promised my self I wouldn't cry

Ah, Mosaic. Those were the days.

I have the same router. I don't know anything about it, but it works and wasn't hard to set up, so I like it.

So, how come it says "Reader Comments (0)" when there's already 1?

Bah.

I was on 14.4 for 4 years before getting 56k with my laptop.

Still connected on 56k and ADSL is too expensive in NZ to get it.

How much did you get that router for? I should check Wal-Mart tonight...

I had a linksys router and it fucking sucked. It would poop out on me 3 or 4 time in one day, and I would have to reboot it each time. Then it would stay up for weeks, then be back to its old tricks again. I finally chucked it and bought a MS router and it works better.

If you're happy with it and it actually *works*, that's just ducky, but keep an eye on it.

Well the router installed perfectly and So far it has been good for 5 hours.

AOL was *never* cool. I remember, (I think I was still telneting into text-only browsers at that point on a 14.4) when it was not just acceptable, but considered proper to flame AOL users who who posted to the usenet.

I beg to differ. I had three friends who all used early AOL back when it was a Mac only program. And AOL was the shit before they made a windows client and then it became lame. This was back when nation wide email was a new concept and 256 was a hell of a lot of colors.

But oh well those days are over.

When I read this stuff I get all flustered. I just cant relate to the good ol days like you folks. Hey maybe I am not a geek after all.....wait....nevermind.

Hell Yea. The coolest thing about the original AOL was how easy it was to hack the gui into looking cool ass. Also... AOL didnt actually start on the mac.. Most people dont know this but it started on the Commodore 64/128... Under a different name. Q-Link
