It is "Super Bowl Sunday" and I do not care!
It is Super Bowl Sunday and I don't give a rat's ass about sports so it sounds like a nice day to get caught up and have a quiet day at home.
I know the irony that I enjoy videogames but subconsciously think of people who watch professional sports and easily led masses like monkeys in a Skinnerian Psychology experiment. I mean I know how hypocritical that sounds coming from a guy who main source of entertainment comes from pressing buttons and looking at blinking images on a video screen.
I guess it is just an example of Nerd culture vs. Jock culture but my dad doesn't care about sports and neither does my step dad. SO I guess I come from a family of middle class intellectuals who would rather read a book and surf on the web than crack a brewskie and watch them toss the pigskin in the big game.
So I am going to update my Moveable Type software and install some new MT plugins that I have wanted to mess around with and then convince Mr Evil Ninja.net to get off his ass and configure his firewall to work with Xbox Live.
But I will probably drink Root Beer and eat chips and pretzels so it will not be that different that the rest of America. But I will be using my cable for phat bandwidth rather that reception to watch the big game.
And I just want to make a brief pubic service announcement to those people who are going to watch the game just to see the commercials.
1.2.3.
ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR FUCKING MIND! IT IS TV COMMERCIALS FOR FUCK'S SAKE! IT IS A WONDERFULL SUNDAY AND YOU ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO WATCHING COMMERICALS! JUMPING JESUS ON A POGO STICK!
So the Super Bowl is perhaps the cultural equivalent to the Circus Maximums and Roman gladiators with their specials of blood and violence as a tool of pacifying an entertaining the citizens of a war loving empire. Yes we are a war loving country. We sing about rockets and bombs in our National Anthem.
Marx was way wrong when he said that religion was the opiate of the masses. Professional sports on TV are the real opiate of the masses. Not that there is anything wrong with that it is just not my bag baby.

hehehehe.. I won't be watching either - and not just because I'm a girl and don't like sports - I do like hockey and basketball, but I hate football ... my stepdad loved it and watched every freaking game that was televised. *sheesh* The only reason I would watch the Super Bowl would be for the commercials... but.. I really hate commercials almost as much as I hate foot ball. Thank God for cable, internet, games and DVD's to save me from the hell of football boredome. ;o)

Jake. It is OK to watch football and be interested in the strategy and pageantry of a game that is brutal and yet poetic. It is a stereotype to think that everyone who watches football(the superbowl)is a raging moron of the "non-elite-geek-clique" Perhaps tomorrow i should write something to that effect. You know me and I am a geek but I love football and I LOVE brutality and organized chaos. That doesn't make me a neophite or a simpleton. I love the game for geek reasons. I think that all geeks need to get past high school and get to what is real. High school does not define anyones life (*ehem* SUVs). Unfortunately it defines most geeks lives, not yours and not mine but most. Geeks sometimes feel the need to have something...some knowledge (of an intellectual nature) that will give them the ammo they need to spite the unwashed masses. To say "I am somebody, even if you did beat me up in higHschOOl". That is why there are hackers.
People are unbalanced. What you define as "Jocks" probably isn't what i would define it as. I was a (sort of) guy in the middle. I played dungeons and dragons but i actually got laid in high school unlike the peeps i played D&D with. The reason for this is that i was more well rounded than they were. That is the only reason. There is I.Q. and there is E.Q. (emotional intelligence). Most geeks posess little or NO E.Q., which is why they are angry and bitter at the world and lash out with computers. Football is too easy a target for them to not pass up because the "morons" and "half-wits" that would play such an insensitive and brutal game just dont see the light. Well I am here to tell you that it isn't that simple. I have known people in life that have been really great athletes (in football)and could make any one of us look like an idiot. PHD(not a programming language....more lika a degree),java, php, dds, sql, asp ETC....
The point is that there are a bunch of people who watch the superbowl for the commercials because the commercials are AWESOME! They spend money on the commercials to get people to watch them because they are hilarious usually. This whole "I am an alternative to the norm" theme is a good thing for diversity but it really doesn't answer any real questions that we all have in life.
Here is an exerpt from something i sort of read one time and stuff...
"You see, there are two types of people on the Internet: ones with huge "ePenises", and ones who like Microsoft. It's up to you to decide which one you are, and if it requires you to write up bug reports every thirteen seconds, then so be it. To find the "best" alternative webbrowser currently on the market, go to Download.com and do a search for the least popular or least downloaded Internet program, because "least popular" is a codeword for "more exclusive." If you use IE, you're in a group with millions of other slack jawed yokels; if you run Big Ed's Hardcore WebPowerBrowser v0.00002 Alpha, then you're part of a tiny elite club that only includes Big Ed and his Dungeon Master friend. Be sure to extol the virtues of this browser at every chance, one-upping those Micro$h4ft drones who are content with their crappy, bug-infested piece of crap."
See what i mean? Oh god here come the flames!!!
Wait how did i get onto a rant Jake? What was I saying at first? Nevermind.....Tomorrow perhaps i will remember, Wheres my remote? mom?

The only things good about Superbowl was that it was on the Simpsons AND it was when Apple aired the 1984 ad.

Superbowl ads also put alot of dumb dot coms out of buisness because they spent all their cash on TV ads on the Superbowl

Whoa Jakemeister! Slow the hate train down. I am here to represent those of us who plan on surfing the web AND watching HOT SEXY men in TIGHT pants run around GRABBING one another and getting all SWEATY. I love football. It's far more thrilling than the statistician's dream of baseball. I love the sheer brutality of the game. I love watching two big beefy mancakes slam into one another, fall to the ground, writhing in one another's sweat and blood. There is something truly animalistic about the whole thing. And while I pretend to be evolved and one of the elite masses *at least in my mind*, I cannot deny my passion for the game.
I have to give Pete props cause I couldn't have written it better. I was a popular girl in high school. I went to every football game. I had a football player boyfriend even *for a little while anyway*. But then again I was also a theater nerd. I was in honor society. I took AP classes for Christ's sake. I think Pete nails it on the head when he says that geeks are the way they are because of a need to prove something to those who picked on them in high school, even though everyone else has moved on and forgotten about it. Look at that GAWD awful show Jenny Jones, where every episode is "I went from Geek to Chic" or "Nerd to Knockout" where people who got picked on in high school come back and carry around these grudges and pains from high school for 10 years and expect someone to apologize. PLEASE! Get over it!
I think your dislike for the game of football and your pursuance of an anti-jock mentality is a direct example of Pete's theory.

I think watching commercials for fun is lame unless they are from other countries and contain nudity.
