« An Open Letter to Apple Computer : Stop Suing Net Journalists if you want my Money! | Main | Review : IntoTheGame.com »
It is not the size of your Macintosh but how you use it.
Wow it looks like Apple announced a very cool little computer called the Mac Mini.
I guess if I am a good little boy over the next couple of months I guess I could afford to get one with half a gig of ram and 80gig drive and a DVD burner. I betcha one of these suckers would look really good with my LCD TV/monitor. This thing is half the size of a Nintendo Gamecube and they start at $500 bucks. That is only a hundred bucks more than the rumored $400 price of the Xbox 2. I could turn one into a cool mac based PVR if I added and ElGato eyeTVwonderUSB. I could reformat my External USB2 hard drive and kick up the storage to 160 Gigs. I am damn glad to see that Apple was able to squeeze a decent graphics chip the ATI Radeon 9200 into this wee thing. I would still keep my Laptop around for all things portable and Windows but this would be a sweet desktop and I already have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, scanner, wacom tablet, external HD, and digital camera that I could use for it.
Also I will have to see if Apple legal behaves and decides to stop being an asshole. From what I understand the net journalists printed info from an anonymous source that broke an NDA. CNN picked up the story and Apple stock surged but Apple is suing the first to break the rumor.
Heck I have all my music in iTunes already. Think of it. It is like a Linux system but it is user friendly and you can actually buy professional software for it.

I'm totally digging those Mac Minis as well. I haven't touched a Mac since the OS9 days, but I am half tempted now.

I broke down and ordered one. I admit it. I'm weak. They were just too sweet once I saw them up close.
As for the lawsuit, I wouldn't worry. If the person they're suing didn't sign an NDA, the only thing they can sue for is for him to reveal his source. This is nothing but shameful, empty threats from Apple, and the case will fall apart if it isn't dismissed immediately.
The weird thing is that Apple's stock dropped right after they unveiled the Mini. Apparently, investors don't like computers where the profit margin isn't sky-fucking-high.

apple fanboys everywhere!
"I bought it because it was sweeeeet" -> OMG!!!
so OK it's small, but starting at 499 USD? -> means 799 USD for the good model?
best feature (Steve Jobs!!!) is the quietness.

Actually, it's $599 for the good model:

And Jake, are you saying that the ability to run more proprietary software than Linux is a positive thing for Macs? Personally, I try to steer clear of proprietary software as long as there's a mature (and by that I mean 1.0 or above) free (as in speech, not beer) alternative (which there is for most software).
It would be hypocritical for me to say that all use of proprietary software is bad, but I just don't see how it's an advantage to be able to run more of it and less free software.

I am saying that I would prefer Mac OSX over Linux. OSX has a wide variety of Open Source apps and well build commercial aps. OSX is sort of the best of both worlds. Besides if I really wanted I could get Virtual PC and run a X86 Linux in it if I wanted to.

Eh. I actually ended up paying about $850 for my Mini — that's the 1.42 GHz one with a DVD burner, Airport Extreme, live baboon with "USB" tail (not sure why they put the quote marks there, but OK), pound of irregular navel oranges, etc., etc.
But it's still half the price of a new iMac with comparable features. And it beats the pants off my aging first-gen G4.
And it's sweeeeet.
