Dear God I need this game pad the Mad Catz RetroCON.
It is an old school NES/TG-16 style gamepad for the PS2 made by Mad Catz my favorite game controller maker.
Harking back to an earlier time, Mad Catz unveiled its RetroCON PS2/PSX controller at E3. This fine piece of hardware mimics the original NES controller while offering improvements such as vibration feedback, a tough aluminum body, and a generous 7-foot cable. Offered in cobalt, silver, and red, the RetroCON should arrive in July or August for $24.99.
There was the SNES style retro gampad for the Gamecube but I never got one.

See, the problem with this thing is that the NES controller (and the Sega Master System one as well) was the most hideously unergonomic gamepad ever created, and the problem's only gotten worse as I got older. With my SMS I can just plug in the Genesis controller, but the NES you're stuck with that square monstrosity.
The MadCatz thing looks cool, but it looks painful to use.
Well I will write a review as soon as I get my hands on one. The square NES gamepads never bothered me. The Genesis gamepad reminded me of playing with a bar of soap.
I noticed the RetroCON in your links yesterday -- tempting, yes. My question: When will somebody make a PS2 controller that mimics the Intellivision ones?
OMG! The hideous intellivision controller should never return...ever! But I have to agree with Jason, that controller looks very uncomfortable, and being a fan of the style of the PS2 dual shock controller, I don't see me trading mine in for the NES-looking one.
I remember tho Colecovision controller ( http://www.colecovision.com/ ).. now that was painfull to use
i dunno...i think it looks cool and i never had a problem w/the old square controllers...then again, i have small hands ;)
The 6-button Genesis pad is my favorite game pad. The D-pad is much better than the original Genesis 3-button pad, and overall its smaller and lighter, even though it has more buttons. This might be personal preference, but I like the round D-pad on the 6-button Genesis over the plus style used on the NES, Super NES and PSX pads.
Just thank god no one mentioned the Atari 5200 controller.. oh no I just did. Great thing about the NES controller was everyone knew how to use it, new players didn't "discover" four shoulder buttons or have to figure out to use the D-pad or analog sticks, etc. Ergonomic problems didn't exist when compared to the awful designs of previous consoles, sans the Atari 2600. I can't wait for this controller to be released, I think it would be awesome to play Vib-Ribbon and the 2-D Megaman games with. Thanks for bringing it to my attention! ...but RetroCON, wonder if Namco will get sore ..Guncon, Negcon, Jogcon..
Here is more on the Atari 5200 for those who are curious ( http://www.atariage.com/5200/?SystemID=5200 )
ok the controller officially came out couple days ago, but my local gamestop and EB dont have it in stock yet.
i have had the retrocon for a few days now and i advise everyone interested in it to wait until a better version comes out the problem with it is the d-pad which is horrible the sensor buttons under the pad are placed wrong so for old school games like pac-man making it to the second stage is a big achievement then after that the same problem is with the square, circle, triangle, and x button the best thing about the controller are the shoulder buttons but who wants to use those
I just got mine. and it works great, not sure what "john" is talking about...the shape gets some getting use to. but the D-pad is neither unsensitive or glitchy at all, works perfect.
My only problem is that I can not use an adaptor with it for my xbox or gamecube...I really wanted to use this with my other systems.
anybody recommend a good adaptor that might work?
ALL OF YOU ARE BONK, THE RETROCON IS ONE OF THE BEST CONTROLLERS EVER MADE... THIS DAMN THING TAKES ME BACK TO THE OLDSCHOOL DAYS WITH MY FIST NES + ROBO SYSTEM... EVERYBODY LOVED THE NES AND THE SQUARE 2 BUTTON CONTROLER. IT IS MADE FOR THE PS2 WHICH IS TOUCH SENSITIVE TOO. IT ITS SO COOL THAT WHEN YOU TURN ON THE PS2 THE CONTROLER DIAL PAD AND BUTTONS LIGHT UP IN NEON COLORS, & WHEN THE GAME LOADS UP THE LOGO "MAD CATS" LIGHT UP NEON RED AS THE START AND SELECT BUTTONS NEON BLUE... THIS CONTROLER KICKS ASS AND IT RUMBLES. IT'S BUILT TOUGH SO YOU CAN DROP IT ALL YOU WANT... I HAD IT EVER SINCE IT CAME OUT AND I WOUNDN'T TRADE IF FOR ANOTHER CONTROLER. IT'S OLD SCHOOL DAMNIT SO GET USE TO IT ROOKIES AND ITS WORTH EVERY PENNY!
P.S. TO B.J. HERES THE BEST WEBSITE TO GET ADOPTERS FOR ANY CONTROLER TO USE THEM ON ANY SISTEM AND PC EMULATORS... WWW.JANDAMAN.COM
ITS A U.S. WEBSITE AND I RECOMENDED HIGHLY AND THE PRICES ARE INCREDIBLE...
Jesus man! Don't you realize that your cap lock key is down?
I think this controller is really cool. I only wish they made one for GCN..

The retroCon is one of the greatest controllers ever made... I love the feel, but the L2 and R2 buttons are hard to get used to but i did. Now when i take the controller to a friends house they wont use it...Oh yeah the whole controller lights up...I truly love this controller... I havent used it for gta yet though...
It is a great controller, and awesome looking one to boot, but give it less than 6 months and it turns to crap.
I had to get one of these because I loved the styling. It feels ok you cant get the precission of the official sony controller. The buttos are not as responsive, the cable is poorly made and the analogue creeps to one side at times but this is solved by unpluggging the controller and reinserting. The pins in the plug are not long enough I think. These are rare to come by now. I would have bought another one just because of the looks.
The problem is it's made by Mad Katz. i have one. and ive got friends who have them. none of them ever worked right. it's a kickass design, made by a crap company. - for digital button games it's GREAT, but anything that demands analog control will fail.
