I don't pretend to understand Metcalfe's Law, I merely enforce it.
It looks like my neighbor at my apartment complex with the unsecured Wifi and the cable modem might have actually figured out how to put a WEP password on it and the days of me enjoying free high speed Wifi might be over. It is a good thing that I was paying for ten dollar dial-up just in case. Ah well it was good while it lasted. I mean I can survive on dial-up but the fun multimedia things such as BitTorrent and Podcasting are not that fun when you have to do it over an analog line. I might consider using my cable modem again but it was nice to not have to cut those $45 checks to the local cable company monopoly every damn month. It is just a bitch to consider when it was so very nice to get it for free.
Man I sure hope that WiMax is a reality soon because it would be awesome if there was some actual competition for high speed internet. I live in an area where I can't get DSL.
Ah well at least I got the full release of NeoOffice/J 1.1 for Mac OSX before the free Wifi goodness dried up. I guess I will just have to stop by my local library or cybercafe and use the free WiFi there next time I have some serious downloading to do. Also the only other real thing that I miss from my cable modem was using Xbox Live.
Time Passes
Whew. It looks like their net connection was just temporary down for a moment. I am back on the lam enjoying free internet goodness from my unwittingly kind neighbor with zero wireless security. It is a nice perk considering I have to put up with them yelling at their kids all the damn time. I nearly peed my pants when I thought that the gravy train of free high speed internet was going to stop coming by my way.
One of the nicest things about living here is the birds nest that is on the light right outside my door. Whenever I come home or leave the bird freak out and try to buzz me for being so close to their nest. I tell them that I was here first.
Just Remember. Metcalfe's law is Metcalfe's law!

Well it is not like my neighbor is not enjoying their wireless network. I mean I make sure not to do anything that would draw attention to this or hog all the bandwidth.
Nah I like the birds and they are damn lucky that they are out of reach of my girlfreinds five cats.

Just hope your neighbor doesn't find out you run a website, then find out the website, then read all this, haha! I can pull a connection from my neighbors too, but I don't live in an apartment, so the signal is too far away. Fastest speed is like 1.5k.... But I have broadband anyway...so no matter.

Maybe you could help your neighbor pay for the free access you are enjoying; or do you buy into the "he is leaving unsecured, so it is not stealing" canard? It which case, would you be cool about your neighbor ransacking your home for a few choice items if you ever accidentally left your door unlocked?
