« Mr Xbox Has Some Dope News! | Main | Review : New Games 4-pack for NeoGeo Pocket Color »
Hello, My Name is Jake and I am Not a Nintendo Addict
This weekend I have been working with my lovely girlfriend Kymberly to redesign and revamp my apartment. In order to move my bookshelf that I have been using as a TV-stand I had to disconnect all my video game systems, TV and VCR on Friday night. We spent all freaking day Saturday shopping for furniture and furnishings and I dropped four hundred bucks at Ikea. Sunday was spent cleaning my freaking kitchen from head to toe and scraping out all the ickiness and filth. So I have had damn little time to play videogames or do much else that does not involve cleaning or assembling Swedish furniture this past weekend.
I have not played Metroid : Zero Mission, NeoGeo Pocket, or Gamecube all weekend long. While this is irritating me a bit I do not feel like I have actual withdrawal symptoms. I like to play videogames but I am not chemically or psychologically addicted to them. I can go with out playing them for an entire weekend but it is not entirely pleasant to totally ignore a game that I have been enjoying. I see where some people can get psychologically addicted if they are predisposition to addictive tendencies. but I don't think that playing video games is any more addictive than reading a good book, or listening to music.
I guess I need the freedom to press pause, save and turn the thing off as needed. I don't see myself getting into a MMORPG where I have to actually be online at a certain time in order to go do freaking EverQuest like stuff. A female friend of mine is dating a guy who is an Everquest addict and he once actually turned down a night of hot sex so he could go home to play Everquest with his guild members and kill some big ass monster. That is freaking nuts. I enjoy the fact that the games I play do not care if they are paused for no defined period of time. I understand the attraction to massively multiplayer online RPG games but that is just not my thing.
I can see where some people with addictive personalities can have problems setting limits and boundaries of behavior with videogames but I do not think they are more addictive than other forms of media entertainment. I can go without playing games. I just do not want to because I think it is a healthy normal perfectly acceptable past time and is all part of a balance breakfast. I do not need to take 12 steps and I am the master of my own joystick.

.... that's what I call really addicted! OMG! I mean, I like to play SWG from time to time but more often I take a break from it for weeks or even months (besides i have no time because of job) because MMORPG's are simply not the stuff that you hoped they are.
