HAXX D4 G1BS0N

hackers The Movie custom PC shotHey my website was hacked by a bunch of cockmongers who call themselves r00t_System. It looked like they were after Wil Wheaton's website and mine got taken down in the crossfire. Things should be back to normal soon. My site is hosted on the same server as Mister Crusher's so whenever he gets slashdotted or Farked it can take down my site as well. The good news is that it looks like my MySQL database is OK and the Search and comment systems is working.

This is the nerd equivalent of having your car keyed or a flaming bag of dog poo on your door step.
I blame 14 year old Brazilian nerds who are trying to impress a former Star Trek actor by vandalizing his site and I got caught in the cross fire.

If I had DSL and had my site running at my place. But I can not get DSL so my site is running on a server in California that I rented. I can control the content of my site but the technical aspects of the software that runs the server is beyond my reach because that is the responsibility of the hosting company. It looks like they are trying to fix it and it will be back to normal soon. There is even a Fark thread on this. Normally I am pretty happy with my hosting ISP

The Einstein quote that they posted when translated from Portuguese in an automated translator is

"The world is a dangerous place of if living, for cause of that they do not make the evil, but yes for cause of that they observe and they leave the evil to happen."

Wankers.

Welcome to my world. Except for I don't deal with flaming dog poo hacks. I get the Russian mob ripping off your financial info kind stuff. It's a fun world out there. Perhaps Wesley should sic the Nanites on the Brazilians.

It's quite amazing the number of websites these guys have defaced (by the link to zone-h that you posted, at least). And they have very different configurations (at least according to the version of Apache and its components that I found on some of the defaced sites), so they're not "one script" kiddies. Scary, because some of them have the latest version of Apache and all their modules, which is what I supposed that they hacked to access the host. I just hope that it's only that now they've been patched, and that previously they ran a vulnerable version. That would mean that the latest versions are more or less secure and that I don't have to lose my sleep on it :-)

They seem to specialize on Linux and BSD hacking, according to the same list. Maybe it's true that MS software is more secure, after all ;-)

Well it looks like they take advantage of overloading old Perl mods. Then they ran a perl program that defaced all index files. They actually never got my password of messes with my database. These guys are script kiddies.

I am still damn glad that I am using a Linux host. The term "Windows Security" is an oxymoron.

In the words of Walter Sobchak: "f*cking amateurs!"

An inproperly-configured Linux box is just as vulnerable as an unpatched Windows server. Windows appears as more unsecure simply because more people run it and because it's under more scrutiny and pressure than Linux. It's like Mac people saying that Macs are better machines because they don't get as many viruses. Well yeah, because no one's writing viruses for Macs. It stands to reason the most popular software will ALWAYS be the target of the largest number of attacks.
