Goodwill is cooler than the GAP

Jake in really a cool pair of pants and this tiki shirtI am about to make a bold claim that if you think about it you will agree that it is true. But you may not like it but I will tell it just like it is. Ready?

Clothes from Goodwill are more cool than The GAP.

Shopping at the Gap is a good idea if you want to look like a clone of everyone else. They are the McDonalds of fashion. The Starbucks of expensive t-shirts. The kids of America look exactly the same all over the country and in some cased all over the world because of the world wide marketing and branding. One pair of kakis indivisible with t-shirts and Nikes for all.

Most of the clothes at the GAP is made in third world sweatshops by people working to long and hard for two little money. The markup profit alone makes movie theater pop corn look cheep

If you actually make the effort you can find funky cool clothes in a Goodwill that you can't find anywhere else. There is a good variety of items there and the stock is always changing. No two stores has the same stuff. The price of buying a shirt or two there is really affordable and the money goes to charities. I got these really cool pair of pants and this tiki shirt for ten bucks.

Sure they have been used but they have been cleaned. If you think of public phone, movie theater seats, and silverware at restaurants are cleaned and re-used than buying a pre-owned shirt that has been washed is really not that bad.

I don't buy all my clothes there. But I am secure enough to get one or two funky items in my wardrobe there.

It is all part of a balanced breakfast, and knowing is half the battle.

Right on! I have found way more cool stuff at Goodwill over the past few years, and all of it for dirt cheap prices. I also had one of my proudest shopping moments at the Goodwill in my hometown - an original Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon album with the original posters still inside (the record was in fairly decent shape too); get this - I only paid 50 cents for it. I feel like I robbed Goodwill somewhat that day, but hey, what can you do?

Seattle's goodwill is particularly large. Did you shop there, or in Bremerton?

Posted by: Anita Rowland at July 23, 2003 9:16 AM

I went to the Bremerton one but I need to go the the Seattle one. Same thing with The Chicken soup Brigade store.

I actully got the record in a small town in northeast Texas (Sulphur Springs, if there is even a remote chance you have heard of it). I'm living in Austin right now, but the goodwills are a little overpriced (compared to what I'm used to). It seems that second-hand shops are pretty hip in Austin, so even Goodwill jacks up the prices a little. But then again, it's all for charity, so it never keeps me from going back :)

Cute hat :)

hehehe... I used to do most of my clothing shopping at Goodwill and other thrift stores when I was in high school and college.*ahhh...* fond memories. Now I buy most of my kids clothes there - baby clothes hardly get's worn out and fancy kid clothes are DIRT cheap there. My mom and I used to spend the weekends going to all the thrift stores on the weekends.

pellinore - can't believe you mentioned Sulpher Springs! Yikes! I live about 20 or so miles south of that place. Next time you visit you'll have to hit the absolute BEST thrift store in the area (it's in Plano). ;o)

I wish I could find out why ALL of the goodwill stores within a 30 mile radius of my apartment all closed down recently. I actually had some stuff to drop off that I don't wear any more and the store was closed. I tried the one in the next town, that one was closed too. Turns out they all closed down at the same time...

The picture in the background is Shatner-ific!!

Posted by: puunum at July 23, 2003 11:07 AM

Hell you look like a deranged Jake Metcalf in that picture or the evil Kirk from Star Trek episode 52. I like it!

Whenever we used to shift house (and that was regularly), we would donate lot of stuff to Habitat for Humanity (which is probably the closet to Goodwill in Invercargill). They have this old supermarket which they've converted into a large 'Bargain Barn' and sometimes I would go down there and buy some semi-good stuff that nobody else would want.

On Tuesday, I brought a cheap screen filter, a copy of Road Rash 2 and a PlayStation Demo CD for $6NZ.

puunum - I notice the picture also! I didn't want to be the big Star Trek Nerd by mentioning though. hehehehe... I'm starting to think your my alter ego. ;o)

It is a framed posted that my dad got me when I was in 6th grade or so. It was the 25th anniversery of Star Trek

Posted by: Jake at July 23, 2003 12:22 PM

Judy- Don't think that our superhero Petey hasn't mentioned to me several times that you and i tend to feed off of each other. I like it!

I don't have much personal knowledge of any of the Goodwill places in my area, but I'm certainly no stranger to the St. Vincent DePaul here. They have furniture, electronics, and old software too, which is always fun. Where else could you find such Electronic Arts classics as Zany Golf or Jordan Vs. Bird?

Gap sucks the soul. My fave is Village Thrift in North Philadelphia...you have to hope you don't get caught in a drive by, but the pickins are huge!

hehe...i always forget how cute you are til you post pics...:P
love the shirt...the pants? eh...but i've shopped at goodwill...we have a big one down in the king william part of town that's really nice...i like it there...:)

Jake...I like them both.. Just not together.. it's kinda scary all at once. I have said it before and I will say it again.. I am a proud corporate whore. I shop at the Gap, I drink Starbucks coffee, and I eat at McDonalds. In fact, I am about to go drink some Starbucks, while I wear my Levi's Jeans, my Gap teeshirt, and my Adidas Tennis Shoes. Maybe I'll stop and get some McDonalds on my way.

Posted by: Anna at July 23, 2003 5:02 PM

The thing is Anna is that there is alot of GAP stuff at Goodwill. It just four bucks a shirt.

Posted by: Jake at July 23, 2003 5:09 PM

Wow, is EVERYONE wearing that newsboy hat now? My bf just started wear that hat... I think it started from that Julia DeMato chick on American Idol 2.

Posted by: ernie at July 23, 2003 7:17 PM

Someone looks awful cute...

Posted by: rah at July 23, 2003 7:57 PM

yeah, i agree w/Anna...the pants are fine and the shirt is fine, but not together...and my hubby has been wearing a hat like that for 8 yrs or something...lol
in either case, yeah, you look damn cute ;) hehe

Posted by: lilly at July 23, 2003 8:32 PM

damn, i keep forgetting to ask, why the clenched fists? do you chew your nails?? ;)

Posted by: lilly at July 23, 2003 8:33 PM

Hey I have been wearing one since 1990. I started when I was a skater kid in Jr. Highschool

I clenched my hands because I was trying to pose. I don't chew my nails but I have been known to chew collors on a shirt. I trace it back to the 70s when I was a little kid.

Posted by: Jake at July 23, 2003 8:53 PM

Dont try to pose...be the pose. Align your chi and chakras before you pose and align yourself to the north.

Posted by: peter at July 23, 2003 9:25 PM

Don't forget....Be at one with the Feng Shui.

Posted by: puunum at July 23, 2003 9:28 PM

and let the Shatner flow through you.

Posted by: puunum at July 23, 2003 9:30 PM

my uncle wore a hat like that throughout the 80's.. and yes jake i know i can buy GAP clothes at the goodwill... the difference.. i prefer new clothes that someone else's body stank hasn't permeated.. somethings no matter how well they are cleaned are not the same as new clothes.. i would rather pay 19.50 for a teeshirt that hasnt been tainted by years of wear and body stank :-D

Posted by: Anna at July 25, 2003 1:11 PM
