Get your US PSP on March 24th Bitches!
Sony has just officially announced today that the Playstation Portable will go on sale in the US on March 24th.
The "PSP Value Pack" will set you back a whole 250 bucks. That puts is a hundred bucks more than the Nintendo DS. The 250 gets you a PSP, 32 MB Memory Stick Duo, headphones with remote control, battery pack, AC adapter, and a Demo disk. The first million sold comes with a UMD disk of the Spiderman 2 movie.
The games that will be out for the launch will be
Ape Escape: On the Loose,
ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin' Trails
Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower, Capcom
Dynasty Warriors, KOEI
FIFA 2005, Electronic Arts
Gretzky NHL
Lumines
Metal Gear Acid
MLB
MVP Baseball
NBA
NBA Street Showdown
Need for Speed Rivals
NFL Street 2 Unleashed
Rengoku: Tower of Purgatory
Ridge Racer
Smartbomb
Spider-Man 2
Tiger Woods PGA TOUR
Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix
Twisted Metal: Head On
Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade
Wipeout Pure
World Tour Soccer
I am quite curious to see if it lives up to the hype and I might get one later on in the year. This is going to defiantly cut into the Nintendo DS's action but since it is a full hundred bucks more than the DS it will be interesting to see it can cut into Nintendo's group of Gameboy Advance and DS gamers. I mean how many kids have two hundred and fifty bucks lying around for a portable game system and that does not even include a game. I think they are going to sell out instantly and that they will be hard to come by for a while. I think that the market is big enough for both Nintendo and Sony at the same time but I bet the PSP will be much more common on people who are willing to hand out a big wad of cash for some camera cell phone thing.
Am I going to get a PSP on the first day it goes on sale. Probably not. Will I have one before 2005 is over. Yeah most likely once the games start really coming out.

I d-o-n-t n-e-e-d movies on PSP.
NDS is much more innovative (technically speaking).

I'm just not seeing a killer app in that launch list. Most of them are just ports of sports games that play better on a big screen anyway. I'm a big RPG fan, so a PSP Final Fantasy game might convert me, but I can't see myself getting a PSP until the price has dropped to around $150 and some original games have come out. Until then, I don't see any reason that I can't amuse myself with my DS.

Yep $250 is a lot of money for something like that.
I have been looking forward to getting a DS pretty soon. My kids have a bunch of GameBoy games.

Well, technically speaking, there are a few RPG's in the list of launch titles. And I have seen them in action and know of at least three of them I will definitely want. I still don't think I prefer to compare the DS and the PSP, though. The PSP is not launching with the 10 year old in mind, it's more for the older gamer, like myself and you. Most of the titles are not geared toward younger gamers. As for the sports titles, they are ports maybe, but they will show the PSP's ability to network for multiplayer action. Rather than rag on Sony for not having the titles you want, maybe you should applaud them for having titles at all. Which we can't say for the DS.

I don't think $250 is bad at all for new out of the box technology as opposed to miniaturization of five year old technology running ten year old games as launch titles. Sorry, that's not innovation, that's typical Nintendo repackaging for the handheld market. Ys VI is slated for the PSP (PS2 version as well) later down the road and I can't wait to play a new more traditional Ridge Racer game (I don't like Ridge Racer DS all that much) after the mess that was R: Racing Evolution. Not to mention it's the freaking return of Wipeout! ... Portable Wipeout!!
