GameCube Game Boy Player!
![]()
Note: the full size graphic is pretty big
Via Gamespot. And Nintendo.
SUPER SWEET!! Nintendo announced a update on the Super Game Boy concept and are going to be releasing an device that attaches to the expansion port on the bottom of the Gamecube that allows you to play Gameboy Advance games on your Gamecube and normal TV. This is kick ass and I have been waiting for something like this. No hacking of the GBA required and I can play Castlevania Circle of the Moon on a forking TV instead of squinting on the GBA screen. I will probably buy alot more GBA games because of this thing. They haven't officially named it yet but I will bet you 20 bucks they call it: Super Gameboy Advance.
I think one of the big differences between Microsoft and Nintendo is that Microsoft set out to have the most powerful hardware no mater what while Nintendo set out to have the most powerful hardware while still making a profit on the hardware. So Nintendo breaks even on every Gamecube sold while Microsoft is probably out a $100 on every Xbox they sell. Not to mention that the Gamecube can pump out 95% the graphics that the Xbox can but with out loosing money. It is going to be interesting to see if they keep doing this voodoo economics on the Xbox2.
Nintendo is going to be selling the Super Gameboy Advance for $40 and that is probably the cost of the GBA hardware minus the screen. That is brilliant.
Update: they are going to be calling it The GameCube Game Boy Player. That is a lame name if you ask me and I think that Super Gameboy Advance would have been better. or Gameboy Cubed

Yeah, the Gamecube Game Boy Player is all well and good, but the random bogus comments on the Xbox was odd. The Xbox's are surprisingly cheap to make, and whilst the profit percentage is smaller, the fact that it's currently outselling the Gamecube far makes up the money.
Do you know whether they are specifically JAP/US/PAL? I wondered if I could pick an import up early.

Microsoft isn't talking about the actual price to manufacture the Xbox but their division has been posting massive losses at a record pace. Do you work in the the Xbox division of Microsoft? No one out side MS knows for a fact but given the rate that the Xbox is bleeding red ink it is assumed by all that they are selling the hardware at a financial loss to make it back up in software publishing royalties.
While the GameBoy Advance games are region less the GBA Player uses a boot disk in the GameCube drive. So you are probably looking at not only NTSC/PAL formats but region lock out in importing one of these.

Are you telling me that I have to use a boot-disc everytime I want to play a GBA title on my Gamecube?
I don't know about financial loss at it's start, just that at present the amount Xbox's are selling at the moment over cost per unit it's failing to be a financial loss. Unless you're talking about overall, I haven't looked at those figures. Either way, doesn't stop all my fav. titles being on the Xbox/PS2, save Zelda anyway. :P That game kicks so much ass. If I have the Gamecube Game Boy Player will I be able to play, for example, Link To The Past multiplayer just using the normal GC controllers?

Yup.
Nintendo has mentioned that there will be a Gamecube disk with the GBA Player. so you don't need to swap disks but the disc containing the GBA drivers and software need to be in the GameCube disk drive before the GBA player will start up.
From what I read in the Seattle Times Microsoft is not expecting the Xbox to cover start up and manufacturing cost for several years now. But they have planned on the Billions it will take to make the Xbox a success and then to follow it up with the Xbox2.
Yes but you will need to have multiple copies of Link for GBA and a GBA or 2nd Gamecube with GBA player.
I actually played a demo of Zelda the Windwalker on Friday. It was really slick and I am glad that I reserved it.
