Fixing a Notebook PC with Screwdrivers and Cotton Swabs
One of the things that my notebook has been doing that really gets me is that the longer that I have been using it the fan has been getting louder and louder. It was pretty quiet when I first got it but since it has a heat sensitive fan it would crank louder and louder as it got hotter.
When I ran it on super hot summer days, or if did a really complex CPU intensive task like compressing digital video the fan would crank into overdrive and suddenly the entire notebook would shut down with no warning. This got worse and worse and it would crap out when I would want to do a simple virus scan or playing a video clip and I got sick of having to put up with this crap.
After a Google search I came across the the Unofficial eMachines forum. The guy who runs that site posted here and had a link to my articles so it was cool to see. He had a tutorial with pictures on how to to open the case a bit, remove the keyboard, take out the fan and clean the vent.
After my good experience with getting my hard drive fixed I thought I would try to see if I could fix it. My warranty had expired so I whipped out my set of jeweler's screwdrivers and took apart my notebook and cleaned the filthily fan and vent. I could not believe the amount of crap and dust that was built up in there over the year. I put all the pieces back where I found them and booted it up much to my surprise it was almost totally quiet just like it was when I first got it. I might have to do this again in a year or so if the cooling fan and heat vent gets all crapped up but after a couple minutes of inner cleaning it is purring like an little orange fluffy kitten.
