Final Fantasy XI is coming to the US PS2 & PC
Final Fantasy XI is coming to the PS2 to in the US as well as PC! According to the sign up for the Beta test! I just signed up for the beta test and hope they pick me. I bet they only have a million billion other applicants.
It is unknown about the status of the PS2 hard drive and I am not sure if they are going to send the PS2 Beta testers hard drives or not. The Japanese version of the game requires the HD so it is doubt full if they can make it optional in the US version.
Here is some info about the game from the Square-Enix press room.
FINAL FANTASY XI will have new and familiar features from the FINAL FANTASY series. Both versions of FINAL FANTASY XI will contain the same award-winning visual style and deep, progressive storyline that has made FINAL FANTASY one of the top-selling and most popular video game series in the world. Players around the globe will unite in the world of "Vana'diel" where they can personalize their characters, play at their own pace, form parties with other players and embark on multiple adventures through vast environments.
In FINAL FANTASY XI, players will become immersed in an expansive, original storyline that includes quests and boss battles. They can participate in missions either alone or with other party members and acquire skills such as alchemy, leatherworking, jewel crafting, fishing and many more. Various communications tools have been incorporated into FINAL FANTASY XI to assist communication between players, including easy-to-use chat and messaging systems.
I would not be surprised to see the PS2 hard drive bundled with Final Fantasy XI in the US. Either that or game stores will have a deal when you get them both. It is probably going to be one copy of Final Fantasy XI sold for every HD for PS2 in the US.
Update : You can't play the game with out a HD and a network adaptor. There are no games that require it except FFXI. It would be cool if they bundled the game with the HD for a hundred bucks. Most likely the PS3 will have a HD but Squaresoft does not want to wait until then. FFXI is now profitable in Japan and it is turning a nice monthly profit.
This US PS2 version is surprising that they are doing a beta of the PS2 version because it was expected that they were only going to bring the PC version of it to the US to get around the Chicken and Egg situation.
It is very rare that a video game upgrade takes off. Sega Genesis Modem, Sega 32X, Sega CD, Super Nintendo CD-Rom, Jaguar CD, and the Nintendo 64 Bulky Drive DD failed due to the chicken and egg situation of hardware upgrades.
The only successful game system hardware upgrades were the Memory upgrades to the Saturn, N64 and the Playstation2 Network Adaptor. Basically from what I have read in Japan everyone who gets a HD also gets a copy of Final Fantasy XI at the same time.
Both Sony and MS have expressed interest into doing Tivo like stuff on their systems so a HD in the Xbox2 and the PS3 are not very likely. Besides the Xbox2 needs it because the Xbox had one.
Oh I can't wait to get my first Chocobo online.

I would email the Kiwi Prime Minister and have him send a formal request on the behalf of all the Squaresoft fans in New Zealand. My chances of getting in the Beta test is about the same as playing the lottery.

I would be very surprised to see the PS2 hard drive bundled with Final Fantasy XI in the US. But i think it would be cool. I think they are going to want to leverage this games profitability on its own because they will certainly sell enough hard-drives ....wait i dunno maybe your right. The new PS3 will come with the hard drive included ....right?

I would like to know if it is going to come to Canada? Cause I've wanted this game for three years now! I'm also asking this question because I live in Canada! Plus will the game work on a bit lower connection speed then 56kb?
Me myself doesn't have a pc but I use my older brother's and he is leaving home soon. To go to college. I'm going to high school grade 7. So respond soon plz!

I do not know for sure but I can't imagine that they would not bring it the the US but not Canada. You might have to pay for the subscription in US currancy. The PS2s modem is at 56k and if you have bad phone lines than you will not have a good time playing the game. I would ask Squaresoft but it should work in Canada.

The official Website says
http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/ffxi_news061203.shtml
"Preparation is still underway for the North American release of the title, which will be available for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and for the PC."
They said North American not just US.
