Electoral Alter Boy
Today I was asked by my local Democratic party to be a poll watcher the Washington State Primary on September 14th. It is mostly a formality but the poll watcher is the party representative watching out and making sure that everything is kosher. This is the first major election since 2000 and the congressional election of 2002. There were no contested congressional races in my district in 2002 so I stayed home. I already mailed in my ballot via Vote by Mail. This will be the first time I have been to a polling place since November 2nd 2000. I sort of feel someone who has not been to confession in years but was just asked to be an alter boy.
Sure it is mostly a ceremonial job but since the Florida election of 2000 there is nothing in the electoral process that seems trivial anymore. I might be doing this again on November 2nd. The real irony is that I know the Libertarian Candidate for Secretary of State but since Washington State's new wacky primary I couldn't vote for her. I am sure that there is a whole new generation of politicians that are growing up with the Secretary of State as a viable choice of occupation.
Thank God there will be no touchscreen voting machines in my county or I would have a coronary.

I am going to make sure that my "thugs" are there as well.

I misunderstood a bit about what a poll watcher does. What my job is going to be is to check in and see if a group of targeted voters have made it to the polls yet then we help out with voter mobilization.
