De Dopifying : Why I got rid of my Xbox.
On Saturday night I went and visited Peter. A fun time was had by all and I brought my PS2. It was really cool to see it on his projector and also really cool on his freaking huge wide screen high def TV. He as a thing for really freaking big screens. But I am not going to go into the Freudian implications of that. I am quite happy with my 19 Inch RCA TV. He was surprised at how many PS2 games I had but then again I did not spend several thousand bucks on TV systems.
I had a moment of clarity last night. I had to De-dopify. I had to get rid of my Xbox. Earlier that week it was the first time that I have played my Xbox in months. I played the rented Star Wars RPG and Capcom VS SNK2 on Xbox live has become scarcely populated. The only people still on it are those who have serious problems and resort to cheap fighters who do super moves over and over again. Playing on line with Auto Modellista and Tony Hawk 4 is still pretty keen on my PS2 so I could get by loosing Xbox live. I
have played and beaten all the good Sega games on the Xbox and I am under whelmed by the lack of Xbox specific games on the market that appeal to me. In fact looking at the games that are planned for the rest of this year there is nothing slated that gets me excited. Yes Mr. Xbox I am fully aware that Halo 2 is going to be out in 2004 and I am sure that it is going to be dope. Sega really made the best Xbox games but even they have stopped making really good Xbox only games.
Normally I do not sell my video game systems but for the Xbox I am willing to make an exception. It is nothing personal I am just a bit disappointed by the black and green behemoth with it's lackluster supply of games. It is now or never to get any return on the money that I put into my Xbox and ten games. I got most of them used so it really did not break my bank account. It really is a cross platform world and I can get most of the games that desire on my PS2 and Gamecube

Mr Xbox taunts me... Yo that is WHACK the Xbox is so Dope.. if you only knew the power of the Dope side of the force.
So I headed to my local Gamestop and traded in my Xbox games for for $225 in credit. That does not seem like a lot at first but they were having a "Buy 2 get 1 Free Used Game Sale" and they had quite a selection of used PS2 and Gamecube games. Taking advantage of the offer I walked away with nine used games one new game and still have 30 bucks in credit.
The used games I got were:
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on Gamecube
Very cute rich graphics and looks like a light fun time. FLIPENDO!
Shinobi on PS2
Super hot Sega Ninja action verses an army of undead evil ninja. These guys can totally flip out and they have the real ultimate power. This game needs pirates so the ninjas can totally kick their asses.
Lord of the Ring : The Two Towers for PS2
Yet another big budget video game based on a license from EA. Both this and harry potter prove that not all games based on movies have to suck.
Devil May Cry 2 for PS2
Now with two disk, two heroes and there is now twice the chances of the devil crying. Capcom is getting better and better at making third person hyper violent Gothic action games.
The Sims for PS2
I have played way to much of the PC version of this game when it first came out. I never got into the expansion packs but since I got this game free as part of the used game deal it is worth checking out again. It looks really good on the PS2 in full hardware accelerated 3d. The Sims for PC was software rendered with some pseudo 3d effects. It looks like the Sims 2 is going to sell a lot and these game are going to continue to break ground in record sales and to appeal to female players.
Ratchet and Clank for PS2
A really slick cartoony platform action game by insomniac games. This is the same company who made the Spyro the Dragon game on PSOne but rather than keep making Spyro games until the end of time they handed the development of Spyro games to another company and set off to make a new game on PS2. Since the PS2 has sixteen time the memory and over fifty times the power of the PSOne the graphics and animation are a treat.
War of the Monsters for PS2
Giant monster from 50's Sci Fi movies in combat in destructive environments. Oh yeah! There is no officially licensed movie monsters but you can figure out what Kaiju is what. This was published by Sony and developed by Incog Games. This is from the same team who did Twisted Metal and it has a similar feel but with giant monsters. Woo Ha!
Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick for PS2
This game is surprisingly cool for a plethora of reasons. First of all it was made by some of the same people who did State of Emergency and it is another Evil Dead game but get this. It does NOT suck. If fact this is a damn cool splatterriffic action game staring the man Bruce Campbell. Screw all the pretender punks like Duke Nukem. Ash is my true choice for a Deadite slaughtering good time. More incredible is that this game is only 20 bucks new. This was the only new game that I got. The good news is that Evil Dead 4 movie has not been ruled out and they are making another Evil Dead video game.
Ico for PS2
This Sony made game is Genera breaking and artfully as it is bizarre. It can be described as impressionistic abstract and minimalist in nature.
Kingdom Hearts for PS2
The bizarre collaboration of Squaresoft and Disney. You think that it would not work but it actually does. The game play is a bit like Secret of Mana but with Goofy and Donald Duck to help you out. It is weird like Pee Wee Playhouse weird but not a bad trip. The 3d animation is wonderful.
This should give me months of enjoyment and is a good trade for my Xbox if you ask me. It is not a Microsoft thing, I looked at my Xbox as it was regardless as to what company made it. I gave Xbox a chance and it came down to the software. I know that Microsoft has more powerful hardware than Nintendo and Sony but in the end you do no play the CPU you play the game.

Well there is really nothing fruaudian about it. A big screen is ALWAYS better than a small screen. An 8 foot wide screen is just "badass" . If you are a movie buff or a gamer, if you have the means ......please look into it....will you? dont be a wimp ok? you gamer freaks would have loved to see auto modellista or quite possibly the greatest game of all time GTA vice city, which i have to buy after seeing the awesome lighting and super cool graphics.
Oh yeah and the gam play!

End of a era. *sniff*
And here I am with my modchipped PSX, N64 and broken Dreamcast. :(

But Peter most TV is still at 640X480. But on a larger screen those pixels are the size of dimes. I am happy with my 19 inch TV and my 15 inch widescreen notebook.

That's a nice stack of games you've got there..especially ICO and Kingdom Hearts.
Still, I'm keeping my Xbox. I've just started playing Star Wars: KOTOR and love it, and I picked up Capcom vs. SNK 2 used last week (guess I won't be playing you online then, huh?).
The upcoming Xbox lineup is solid, with Halo 2, Rare's three (or more) games, not to mention ports of Doom 3 and Half-Life 2. There are also cross-platform games where (usually) the Xbox version is the best of the lot. Of course, if you can't take advantage of the 5.1 surround sound, I guess they're all the same.

I've seriously considered selling my giant black and green box of death. Out of all the consoles I have, it gets the least play time because like you Jake, I haven't found the latest crop of XBOX only titles all that enthrawling. Knights of the Old Republic might change my mind, but I'm holding off on new game purchases right now.
Looking at the previews from E3, GameCube has the most games I want to play coming out in the next year. We'll see if they live up to the previews.

I like video games. A lot.
Part of me has been wanting to get an Xbox for at least Jet Set Future, Panzer Dragoon, and the new Star Wars game, but it still can't be justified -- especially after hearing what everybody else is saying.
I envy anyone who hasn't played Ico yet, you're in for a one of a kind game.

I played Capcom Vs SNK2 on Xbox live but I got sick of it and I get more out of the game playing my friend BBQ on his Dreamcast. I also have the PS2 version.
You know there are some good $60 DVD players out there by Apex but if you want a PS2 get it for the games.
I figure a future computer of mine will be able to run Quake 4, Doom 3 and Half Live 2 so I will just have to wait until then. Perhaps next year or so.
The Sega games on Xbox are very cool but if you must have them I would wait until the Xbox 2 AKA Xenon comes out and you can get an Xbox used for pretty cheap.

...but in the end you do no play the CPU you play the game.
It was the same situation with my Atari Lynx more than a decade ago... It was a shame Atari didn't release as much games as Nintendo did for the GameBoy and eventually I took a step back hardwarewise to a GameBoy, only for the games.
That sucked, 'cause the Lynx was so much better!

Does this mean I will never again get to torment you with the rudos wrestling style of El Nudo? Aww.
Personally, I can think of two very good reasons to hang on to your 'box that don't involve Star Wars: KOTOR (Bad man hurt KOTOR's puppy! KOTOR smash! Rgaaaagh!): Morrowind and Pirates of the Caribbean, the latter being the best movie-licensed game ever because it has nothing whatsoever to do with the movie.
Of course, these only apply if you don't have Windows, which they're much better on.

hey, any idea how long that buy 2 get 1 free sale is going on for? can't find anything on their site...

The XBOX has a few games that I thought were worth keeping the system for: Splinter Cell, MechAssault, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Fuzion Frenzy and most recently SW:KOTOR. Granted, not the hundreds of games Sony has come up with, but enough for me to keep the system. Unlike the Dreamcast, which only came out with two games that I felt were worth it. The DC is the only system I have ever gotten rid of. And I have been buying systems since the NES/Sega Master System.
As for buying the PS2 for a back up DVD player, I do not recommend it. Although the PS2 can be used as a DVD player, it was built to be a gaming machine and playing DVD's in it can burn out the motor and the laser. Like Jake said you can buy a decent DVD player for between 60 and 100 bucks where as the PS2 costs 180. If you're going to buy a PS2, buy it for the games.
tj ~ It will be going on until at least the end of the month. Maybe a little longer. They don't ever give us actual dates for our sales like that.

Yo fool all the bling in da hood ain't worth ponying up your own personal Xbox for! That PS2 is wack! The Gamecube is lame-sauce! Every pimp-juice knows that the Xbox is 846 pounds of pure graphical intuitive power! Dope!

I agree with you about the Xbox (though I feel it was a bit extreme to dump it), that even though it's a capable system, it lacks *something*.
I'm not quite sure what it is... the obvious is the lack of awesome games, but I think there's more to it. Compared to the PS2, the colors are often dark and objects are more fuzzy. Because of this, games have a drab feeling to them. The drabness is really apparent when you compare the same game over different consoles.
The controllers need help too... even with the S controller, it still feels clunky. The buttons really don't feel like buttons either.
To it's credit, I have enjoyed several games despite these pitfalls. To date, my favorites are Morrowind, Colin McRae Rally 3, Orta, Halo, Brute Force, DOA3, Baldur's, and maybe KOTOR (which I'm playing now).

I almost dumped my Xbox. But, instead, I decided to mod it.
Ok, I know what you are thinking:
"Oooohhhh... You modded your system! Bad, bad pirate!" Hey, do you see an eye-patch? I think not. Once you mod your system, the amount of things your Xbox can do increases exponentially. We all know about (or have heard about) the Xbox Media Player, Linux on Xbox, and homebrew applications. But, the more important features are the PVR features that are currently in heavy development, installing a larger hard drive and using it to store your whole game collection (which decreases loading time in games and stops all wear on the DVD’s), FTP file storage, streaming music and movies over your network, and the many emulators (16 bit games with blitters feel much better on a TV with a controller, than on a computer monitor with a keyboard).
And yes, you can flick a switch to turn off the mod chip and play games on LIVE without risk of being banned.
But, then again, these things can only bring you so far. If a system does not have the games to back it up, then all you have is a very inexpensive media player, or a very expensive paperweight.
(Note: I do not condone using a mod chip for piracy reasons. Pirates are scallywags…)

Why to drop your XBOX?slow but Steadily it increases it sales against ps2!In europe where i live XBOX sales now more units per month than ps2.And dont forget that uncle Bill has tons of money to suport his new kid.And why to support a console only for games? If we support with our buys the strongest hardware then more companies will bring their games to that console and the outcome of this would be to have very good games that look even better.I have all three consoles and i have to say that XBOX will eventually overcome ps2.Already many of ps game makers have gone crossplatform NAMCO KONAMI CAPCOM this companies were known for making ps2 and psone only games.Sony has finnaly met her nemesis from another company that i hate MICROSOFT byt i have to admit that Bill knows what he is doing.

Because I was not impressed by the choice of games. Bill Gates has his billions because he does not continue to fund money loosing projects.

I really don't get why you sold the Xbox, man, you could have modded it and turned it into an awsome media centre. That was 80% of the motivation for me to buy one, to fit a large hdd and turn it into a media centre. Sure, i've got a few games on it, play them a little, but it get's most use at my place as a media centre, way cheaper than a custom pc to be a media centre and can still play Xbox games when mates bring them & their controllers around.
Cheers
