BBQ's Super Duper Modded DVD player and the PSTwo

Jake Kissing his PSOneFor the past month I have been envious of BBQ's new kick ass DVD player. It is a Sony progressive scan DVD player that has been modded to play any region DVD disk and it can skip past any user control restrictions. What that means is that it can play any damn DVD in the entire world including DVD-Rs and when there is annoying restrictions on user control like forced commercials and logos and messages that the DVD publishers want you to watch it can just skip past them. BBQ has the Japanese version of Kill Bill Vol.1 with the super bloody sword fights as well as cool imported DVDs like Battle Royale. BBQ ordered it online from a import DVD site.

Now there is a modded Toshiba progressive scan DVD player being sold at Books Kinokuniya at Uwajimaya over in Seattle. They sell Japanese Region 2 DVDs there so it makes sense to sell a region free DVD player. It can also play MP3s and WMA's that have been burned to a CD-R as well as VCDs. I have been damn tempted to get it but I want to see if Sony is actually going to come out with the PSTwo.

It looks like Sony is going to have a press conference on October 26th and they are expected to unveil a smaller re-designed PS2 there. The backed up rumor all started when they copyrighted the term "PSTwo" and it was reinforced when retailers noted shortages in current PS2 supplies. I would love to see if they have a quieter fan and other improvements

I am going to have to check out modded DVD players from PlayAsia.com or YesAsia.com and wait for the suspected PSTwo announcement before I get a new super duper gray-market DVD player.

Here is the one I got:

Look for "UOP disabled" or "UOP off" when you search for a DVD player. UOP stands for User Operation Prohibitions. Do you know how much I DON'T miss sitting through those FBI warnings, logos and commercials? I never have to see that "Operation cannot be performed" message again.

I think the PStwo will be cool but I doubt it will be region-free or have manual override.

Yeah, that's definitely my favorite thing about living in China. Pretty much any DVD player you buy here is region free and can play anything. There is also a huge abundance of Korean and Japanese movies. There's so many, I'm at a loss as to where to start. I have the Korean 2 Disc edition of Battle Royale, which rules. I haven't tracked down the Japanese version of Kill Bill yet though.
