ATI to Power Xbox Xenon
Cnet is reporting that ATI has beaten Nvidia in supplying the graphic chip to the next generation Xbox rumored to have the codename "Xenon".
This is a big deal because it would put ATI in a position to power the Nintendo Gamecube, Nintendo "N-5", Nintendo "Gameboy Next" and now the Microsoft Xbox "Xenon".
Nvidia had a large chunk of their sales directly related to Xbox chips so this is a massive blow to them. This will not affect current version of the bling bling videogames system but it will mean that the next chips to power the Xbox will be designed in Canada instead of Taiwan.
ATI said it entered a technology agreement with Microsoft to develop "custom, leading-edge graphics technologies" for the console.
"We selected ATI after reviewing the top graphics technologies in development and determining that ATI's technical vision fits perfectly with the future direction of Xbox," Robbie Bach, senior vice president of Microsoft's home and entertainment division, said in a statement.

i thought the new Xbox had the Next title, not the new gameboy, also i have heard that the new nintendo system is called Nexus
also, i read on another forum (cannot remember because of stupid vocab words, screw you high skool!) that NVidia would continue suppliying the chips for M$

did i say cable modem, i meant rounded triangle that looks like the modem from the side from its side

I have not heard Nexus for the Nintendo system but the official code word is "N5" as in the fifth Nintendo console system.
That was a rumor that the Xbox 2 will have Next in it's name and that it's code name is Xenon. Then again "Xbox" was a leaked code word. They don't want to call it Xbox2 because it would sound less powerfull compared to the Playstation 3.
The Nvidia rumor is not true. The Microsoft and ATI press releases make it official that ATI will be powering the next Xbox hardware. That means that the Xbox 2 will probably not be backwards compatible.

why would you think just by switching manufactures that would make the new co nsole not backwards compatible. If you have a computer with nvidia card and replace it with an ATI, youc an still play the same games, so that statement is bull. Oh yes you will say but the drivers are neccesary, thats just code and they wil be able to make the code compatible to play the old games on the new system.

Because the Xbox development kit has graphic effects that are coded specifically to Nvidia graphic effects. They are coding to the specific Xbox graphic hardware instead of generic DirectX reference platform.

Yes, but perhaps ATI will design a chip that has architechture simialar to nVidea's chips, or maybe it will be so powerful as to be capable to emulate it.

I doubt they can do that with out infringing on Nvidia's tech patents. Microsoft has never promised backwards compatibility with the current Xbox software with future systems. Nvidia and ATI are fierce competitors and there is no love between them.

The xbox is similar in many ways to a PC, both in code architecture and its OS. You can run everything from media players and emulators amd many other PC style aplications (yes even linux) with the propper modifications of course. Why would anyone think that with such advancements and moding being accomplished by ordinary, tallented individuals that microsoft would have even the slightest difficulty making a backward-compatible system? To think that a change in grapic processor manufacturers would make microsoft unable to make xenon play xbox games shows a tremendous lack of faith in the skills of MS programers. Microsoft didn't get to where they are by making short sighted decisions, so you can bet that they started working on these issues well before we even heard of thier decision to go with ATI. I personaly agree with Jake. I dont think it matters who the GPU is made by, but even if it is an issue rest assured that MS will not have a problem working around it.

I'm surprised Microsoft would have a device with "Next" in the title-- Steve Jobs developed the NeXT computer after he left Apple.
They could call it "Boiled Brussel Sprouts" and I bet people would buy it when it comes out.

Well we only know what the leaked code names are and they can change. I mean Gamecube was not called Nintendo Dolphin.
You know before the PS2 there was no backwards compatibility in game systems since the Atari 5600.

This is asome a NEW X-box, I read out about it in my x-box magzine. I'm starting to save now I bet it going to be like $300 mimminul when it comes out. I remember whent he PS2 came out it was $500....so u may never know how much it will cost. The x-box Xenon will throw PS2 and soon coming PS3 down into the trash because then the X-box will be the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Peace,
Leon

No you are wrong. The PS2 was 300 when it came out. So was the Playstation 1. Actually I think that Xbox 2 will not have a bigger market share than Xbox 1 and Playstation 3 is going to be as popular as PSOne and PS2.

i heard that Microsoft are talking to emulation specialists - Connextions. In order to help emulate the Xbox's architecture on the xbox 2.
Posted by: dark_link at December 25, 2003 9:17 AM
That company is specialized in making PC emulators so you can run Windows in virtual Machines in Macintoshes. I still and skeptical if they can emulate the specialized hardware chips of the Xbox1 in the Xbox2

Well children, currenty Microsoft owns the full rgihts to the nvidia chip, and they have been sold to ati only to manufacuter (nothing has been modified in the XBOX 1 w/ the chip made from ATI)... the XENON on the otherhand will be all ATI and will not be powered by an X86, even though it will be powered by a dual IBM CPU and possible a 3rd "sub" or "pre" CPU, It will not be powerfull enough to emulate the X86 using software (the future mac G5 dual CPU that will be reliesed in 2005 isn't even fast enough to emulate an X86 PIII) ... and I'm Guessing MS won't be using $500 CPU's in there new console.

Yo, i've been waiting for a good online gaming system from nintendo for a while. So i'm hoping that either gamecube comes out with one(not likely) or that the new so called "N-5" will because i'm really jealous that all my friends who've got x-box or ps2 are playin online and havin fun.
Posted by: Craig at May 2, 2004 8:39 AM
this n-5 system better be more of a contender to ps3 and the new x-box system because gamecube didn't do so well against x-box and ps2

A word to the wise,
I am the owner of a game development company in Louisville called DragonNest Entertainment, and after talking to microsoft we have found out that they are working on the backwords compatibility. On top of that with the new graphics Processor the polygon count for the graphics has jumped almost 95% so expect some amazing graphics coming from our company and from the other company's.

Posted by: chris at July 11, 2006 12:11 PM
Jesus Chris you are such a tard. This was from back in 2003?
Actually the "Gameboy Next" is not the Nintendo DS. The DS is a third console line and Nintendo is still working on a Gameboy Advance replacement.
