Off my post Ripping Rented DVDs is Fun for the Whole Family!

Q: 500+ dvd's that i have rented and copied over the years. Someone should invent a jukebox for dvd's, it's a real bitch going through them to pick out the one you want to view.

A: They actually make DVD jukeboxes but they are super expensive so I would just make your own using ripped digital video jukebox using MPEG 4 files.

If I were you I would use a ripping and encoding program like Handbreak. I would rip all your DVDs to MP4 format and put them all on a really big Terabyte hard drive and serve them on a Window Media Center PC, MythTV or a Mac with Frontrow that way you could make a really cool movie jukebox all off a hard drive based system and not have to worry about swapping discs or a robot swapping discs.

That would be much more future compliant and earn you way more hacker cred than buying some DVD robo switcher. Physical disc media is so last century.

There is a middleground option, we went with the Sony 400-Disc DVD Player

The UI leaves something to be desired and the setup can be irritating, but once it's setup it works fairly well and sorts fairly well.
