Are Your Legs OK? Are You a Monkey?

Naki DancePadI have been playing Dance Dance Revolution Konamix recently on the nights that I do not go bike riding and it is a good cardiovascular aerobic work out. I live in an 2nd flood of an apartment so I can just about only play in the early evening and I can only play it for about an hour until I feel like I am about to pass out. A fan and shorts really help.

However I can't really play the DDR machine at the mall because I have never seen it not being dominated by a group of 10 random Asian American kids who live for nothing but DDR and pimped-out Honda Civics.

Dance Dance Revolution is one of those games that you can't brag about or talk about while still trying to maintain a cool visage.

i've only ever heard of kids playing it, really...but that's cool! i can't even recall the last time i went to a mall...has to be at least 4 yrs...

It is actually pretty popular in Washington and California. When I went to Nebraska I played the DDR machine at the mall and I turned around and I had a crowd about about twenty people staring at me. They have never seen anyone play it.

My nephew was playing DDR extreme at the arcade in the fun forest at the Seattle Center, on beginner level. After he was done, an older boy got one and played as expert, where you use all eight footpads. wow!

it does seem like good exercise.

I saw a gentleman in the mall here in St. Louis, Missouri getting a full work out with this game. It appeared as if he memorized the songs & steps. I don't recall him missing a beat. I stood there for about 15 minutes, and a crowd of people circled around him. WOW.... I'd like to take a look at this up close.

Doh! There goes your coolness factor. ;)

You would think that people memorize the steps, but most of the time thats not the case (Unless they're facing away from the screen) You can eventually just read the arrows that fast. Yes I am an X-DDR junkie, and I still play every couple of weeks.

So I'm confused.. you seem to mention DDR a lot so I am wondering if you are trying to maintain a cool visage and not doing so well at it or if you are embracing the geek? :-D

Actually Anna I am a Nerd not a geek. And I am cool in my own way. Mr Rogers told me so.

Yeah it is more reading the arrows and reacting then memorizing but if you play a song a couple times you get it down. You can't really do stuff that is repedative with out memorizing it.

DDR is insanely popular in the Santa Cruz area where there is a DDR Extreme machine every 30 feet or so along the boardwalk. It's a little easier on the body to play out in the cool ocean air, however. Then you walk over and eat a deep fried twinkie and all your DDR exercise goes to hell. ...vicious cycle

DDR is also widely poplar at the student unions here in Madison. People will grab a beer and crowd around to watch the DDR freaks go to town.

I've only played once with some friends, but even then, it was pretty intimidating looking like a stumbling dork in front of all those strangers. I can see the advantage of having it in the privacy of your own home.

I love DDR. :) I play it in the arcade and, on average, for about an hour a day at home and I'm over 30. I never really get why people think there's a stigma against this game. It's a lot of fun, and just a really solid video game. I love dancing and doing things with my feet like skateboarding so DDR has always felt like a great mixture of all that.

HA! that is the funniest thing I have heard in weeks! Jake, your humor continuously surprises me. Do you mind if I use that line? If you hear me use it at work will you be offended because it made me laugh out loud!

Sure Pete knock yourself out. Here read this comic.

I've never gotten the hang of DDR myself. Which is funny because I loved the old-school Bust-A-Groove and Parappa the Rappa. Maybe it's the difference between using a controller and using your feet. I'm not usually pro-excercise.
