8bitjoystick.com's Best Films of 2004

Oscar StatueThe Oscars are coming up and I have had low opinions of the Academy Awards in the past so I thought I would put together my own list of the best films of 2004. I can't say that I have been a big fan of the approved movies in this past year. Overall films have been pretty weak in 2004 but there were some notable exceptions.

Shaun of the Dead
This is a damn fine independent film about average guy who is trying to get his girlfriend back and get out of his funk but it happens to happen on the day of a zombie apocalypse.

Hero
Hero is a really good cinematic martial arts film that is way better than any action movie that Hollywood has made as of late. I know it was made in 2002 but it was released in the US in 2004.

Kill Bill Vol.2
Part two of the martial arts epic is a pretty good flick on it's own.

Ghost in the Shell 2 : Innocence
Mamoru Ishii has made some of the biggest mindfuck animated films of all time. This film takes digital graphics to a whole new level.

Donnie Darko Director's Cut
The Macabra 80s sci-fi time-travel teenage insanity movie was really cool to see in a longer extended director's cut at the movie theater.

Supersize Me
This started off as a movie about a stunt about eating at McDonalds for a month but it ended up being a really damn good documentary about the American lifestyle and the fast food industry.

Napoleon Dynamite
God get off my case it was a good movie about this guy growing up in Idaho. Stupid llama. Vote for Pedro.

mainstream:

this list reads like a AA nominee list... no true outstanding or (exception: I haven't seen GITS 2) touching movie in it.

I thought GitS2 was one of the worst movies of the year. It looked cool, but the whole pacing and story and dialogue was rubbish.
