8-bit Joystick.com Changelog Ver.04 : Just the FAQs

I finally got around to writing a good FAQ page for this site.

Here are your frequently asked questions about this site and the info about the people who write for it. Collect them all! While supplies last, For oral use only, Offer void where prohibited. Results are not typical

Playing PC games in the old movie War Games1. What is the purpose of this site?
This site is a non commercial creative endeavor. It is sort of a hobby for me and while I do take it seriously this is just a random creative pass time.

2. Who runs 8bitjoystick.com?
Jake is the owner and publisher. He can be emailed at
8bit AT 8bitjoystick.com
His friends BBQ and Peter also contribute and write things from time to time.

3. Is this a blog?
It started out at one but I wanted to move it into more an Internet magazine like publication. I like to think of it as an eZine. Mental Ground Zero is my personal blog

4. How much money do you make doing this site?
None. I paid a modest fee to run this site but I don't make any money of it. I used to work at a failed Dot-com company and the idea of trying to pay bills by giving away free or next to free content over the Internet has left somewhat a bad taste in my mouth. I am not opposed to the idea but I am not quitting my day job any time soon.

5. Dude you are such a sell out. You talk about brand names. You are such a tool.
Screw you, you wanna be communist piss ant.

6. Hey will you run my banner ads?
I really would rather not unless you had lots of money up front.

7. Hey will you review my game or or product thing.
Sure just email me with the details and I will email you the contact info.

8. Can you email me a game ROM?
No, that would get me sued and I like most game makers and would like to stay on their good side.

9. Can you give me a game?
Shouldn't you get a paper route or mow some lawns? That is what I did when I was your age.

10. Can I download a free bootleg game from you?
No. Go save your weekly allowance or ask your dad for a raise.

11. Do you have sexy naked pictures of Wil Wheaton or naked video game art?
Nope I do not. But I still get search engine hits about it.

12. How do I start my own blog?
I would look into a TypePad account if you are not a hardcore web dork. If you know how to set up a MySQL and Apache system I would consider MovableType. That is what I use and I love it.

13. Is this site family-friendly?
I have nothing against it but I like the freedom to occasionally swear and mention unmentionables when it serves me well. It can get R-Rated on occasion but it is mostly PG.

14. So why do some of the older links not work?
I had some major database corruption with my old Berkley DB system and I had to change my URL naming scheme when I moved to the MySQL set up. When I have the time I should go through my older posts and correct them but just use the search function until I do.

15. Do people really read FAQs?
I don't know. Are you reading this?

16. Hey will you link to my site?
Send me an email and I will check it out. If I think it would be worth a regular read I will put it on my Web Portal.

17. Can I use this as template for my site?
You can knock yourself out with the design and some graphics. It would be OK to post some brief excerpts but it would tick me off to copy something I wrote word for word and pass it off as your own.

18. So can I download technical diagrams and drivers for joysticks here?
No, I don't have anything like that. Try the website of the company who made your joystick.

19. Will you join Friendster, Orkut, Blogshares or some other damned social network?
No I would rather spend my time playing video games and reading the web.

20. Hey do you think you could do _____ on this site?
Well email me and I'll see what I can do.

21. How often will this site be updated?
I usually update it every weekday and once on the weekends. But sometimes I will update it a couple times a day or skip a day if I am busy. If this was a job it would be much more consistent.

Great FAQ. *still giggling over #5* :D

Oops. Sorry. I came here via a google search involving the words "communist, wil wheaton naked, piss, and joystick". I think I'm in the wrong place.

*Backs out slowly...*

:D

(Guess I just contributed to that R-rating, for "suggestiveness and adult situations")

You know I wish there was an easy way to tell Google not to scan a page with out haveing to edit my robots.txt file.

There is. Put:

in your header (you could probably hack MT to make this a checkbox for individual entries).

(You did realize I was joking about hunting for Wil Wheaton pr0n, right? Although the above would make for some very disturbing slash fiction...)

< META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW" >

MT ate my HTML.

Posted by: Chris at February 18, 2004 1:52 PM

Yeah but that needs to be in a header. Since MT is template based I can not differentiate between the entries that I do and do not want indexed by goggle with out the robots.txt.

spoilsport ;) (kidding)

"pissant" is one word...though i love your use of it...hehe

and after playing around in someone's typepad acct, i would NOT recommend it...even a dummy like me could install MT, so i don't think they really have to know MySQL or Apache...(though i HAVE become more dorky since switching to MT...so you might have a point there) :)

The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition says that it can be spelled both Piss-ant or Pissant ( http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=pissant )

Well I am thinking about hooking up my Girlfriend with a TypePad account
