33 Things I Hate About The Internet
Internet dorks like myself who have been reading wired magazine since the early 90s usually only go off about cool Star Trek positive things about the technology but there are very real dystopian aspects to keep in mind.
Here is a brief list of things that I hate about the net in no particular order of importance.
33 Things I hate about the Internet
1. Fringe political news sites or blogs that take bias reporting and mix it with a little hatred and ideology then regurgitate it as fair and balanced news.
2. The non stop barrage of Microsoft specific email and server viruses. I don't use any Microsoft server or email programs so I am not threatened but I am still annoyed by it.
3 Nigerian email scams, I don't really need to explain this one.
Hello Dear Sir
I am Dr. Mububtototo I need the bank account in order to transfer the monies
4. Bizarre disturbing medical stories that get passed around the blogosphere. They do not enrich anyones lives they are a digital freak show.
5. Freaks who enjoy posting bloody and perverse snuff photos onto a public forum. It is like people who place signs of dead babies and bloody corpses a public place in order to make their point. It is the same as when monkeys shit in their hands and throw it at whoever walks within ear shot.
6. I am troubled by the fact that hate groups and off-kilter fringe elements can network. They get the idea that just because there are more than 10 of them that their twisted ideas are valid.
7. Now thanks to the internet everyone in the world can find out how to build a bomb.
8. New age cults and extremist churches can use the net to bring in new members. Aum Shinrikyo, Heaven's Gate and Rael all used the net. Jim Jones would have a web site if he was alive today.
9. Vanity blogs run by arrogant bitches who will do anything for attention. You know the type.
10. Bastards in Russia or a Third-world hellhole who sell child pornography over the Internet. There is a special place in Hell for them.
11. International outsourcing. Thanks to the Internet greedy unpatriotic corporate bastards can lay off American white collar workers and techies and send the work around the world to be done in high tech sweatshops. Damn WTO.
12. All you have to do is accidentally fill in one sketchy opt-in list when you register a product that makes you a commodity on a dozen Spam lists.
13. The Internet can let really stupid people reach you.
14. Forwarded warnings, urban legends, chain letters and pyramid schemes. Almost as bad ad Nigerian email scams but these are usually sent out by your family and co-workers.
15. Typo based domain campers. These are the pricks who will register all the possible misspelling of a popular website and make them nothing but pop-up ads and get rich quick schemes.
16. Streaming video that looks like shit and is the size of a postage stamp regardless of how fast your connection is.
17. Internet Trolls.
18. Pop-up ads.
19. On line catalogs that do not list the price. I mean WTF!
20. Sites that only work in Microsoft Internet Explorer on Windows.
21. People who get pissed when they find out that they can not pirate, music, video games or pornography from your website.
22. Female bloggers who have images of cute women in sexy poses who they are not. VeryBlack.org is an exception.
23. Blogs that consist of nothing but memes, and pictures of pets.
24. People who post bad reviews of products in user review section that are off topic and moronic. Like the morons who gives GTA Vice City a 3 out of 10.
25. PEOPLE WHO TYPE IN ALL CAPS ALL THE TIME!
26. PPL WH TiNK Dat AOL TK iZ K00l ASL? LOL! RTFM N00B!
27. Big flash ads in the middle of something you are trying to read. Interstitials
28. Ads and begging boxes on blogs. Some people think that every damn website should make money.
1. Collect underpants..
2. ????????
3. PROFIT!
29. Greedy dotcoms who think that they just need to advertise louder and more obnoxiously. They falsely think that they can make up for a lackluster business plan with the perfect banner ad and TV spot.
30. Dumb ass web designers who think that anti right click scripts work and are actually a good idea.
31. Mass marketing disguised as entertainment. Sellotainment sucks my ass.
32. Spy-ware, censor-ware and Big Brother-ware
33. When bastards mislabel files on P2P file-trading programs.
These are just off the top of my head and I am sure that I will be able to come up with some more at a later date.

(Not a regular reader, was referred by BBSpot.com. Hello there.)
Obviously, these wouldn't have been my list of things, hence the title "I", referring to yourself. Still, would you care to explain #11? Even assuming that this is a general anti-globalization rant, isn't it worth it? (Well, obviously you don’t think it does.) The better service, the economic growth both in the employer country and in the countries of the employed, and the worldwide connectivity?
(If this seems extremely off topic or you deem it inappropriate, simply delete this post.)

i think that blogging in general is a pretty stupid part of the internet...so you write all your personal shit on some website everyday? so what? who cares? I think the only people who care about blogging is other bloggers (unless we are speaking of the great tuckermax)...
eye h8 it all!

This isn't an anti-globalization rant it is a anti-globalization statement.
If you want to read my actual anti globalization rant it is at ( http://www.8bitjoystick.com/archives/jake_jakes_3xthursday_war_and_peace_in_the_global_village.php ) So what are you all for laying off Americans and sending the jobs to India?

Posted by: Jake at June 17, 2003 9:32 AM
Interstitials are the worst, 'nuff said, though I agree with most everything you wrote. "Yeah, what HE said!" =)

That Marty guy's comments (on the 'Stupid People' link) was a pretty damn good read. Not that I am trying to encourage this behavior, but it's people like him that provide endless hours of amusement for people like me (only because I'm thinking in my head that Marty actually takes himself seriously). I bet Ma4+y c0|_|ldn'+ h4ck hi$ \/\/4y 0|_|+ 0f 4 p4p3r b4g. LOL.

Jake- I have to say that I have really enjoyed today's post. You are in rare form. I loved the list of 33 and your edits on the first 2 comments. 8Bit rocks!

Post rocks!
got here from bbspot.com btw. :)
just to stir it though, #10 is a *little* bit biased.
I mean, are you saying that child-porn selling freaks in places that aren't russia or 3rd world are ok? And they don't have a place in hell reserved for them? Or do you, for some reason, think that it doesn't go on outside those countries?
I know, I'm being an anal bastard, but it just bugged me for some reason. I'm not trying to pull a #17 ;)
cheers

For your entertainment, I submit to you the most retarded "anti right click script" I have seen: http://www.fearsquadron.com/2%20Pinups%20HQ.htm
Posted by: Jakob S at June 18, 2003 4:27 AM
I think we all *or at least those that are cool enough* know who #9 is about.. and the whole Nigerian email thing reminds me a lot of my french petroleum email stalker.. which since I took his emails and posted them on here ridiculing him... have stopped.

*STANDING OVATION*
Posted by: Jen at June 18, 2003 10:04 AM
Heh, interesting. Most of these things are reason I love the internet. Being on AOL, I do see alot of that(26). It gives the rest of us a bad name. (See http://satanichu.diaryland.com or http://www.atheistdiary.com for examples of AOL'ers that are not idiots)
Posted by: Saedin at June 18, 2003 12:04 PM
I still think your money is better spent of just about any ISP
http://www.8bitjoystick.com/archives/jake_this_just_in_aol_sucks.php
Posted by: Jake at June 18, 2003 12:16 PM
That is largely a matter of opinion. I prefer AOL to the other ISPs I have used. True, I haven't used that many (about 3), but I'm comfortable with AOL. I really don't see why it should be described in such a negative manner, unless perhaps you're a serious webmaster. Otherwise, I have no problems with it.
Posted by: Saedin at June 18, 2003 1:14 PM
Well I am a serious web master. I still think you are paying too much to use a grossly inferior service. I have used six ISP in my ten years on the net and AOL was the worst experience by far.
Humm.. .I should update the list.
Posted by: Jake at June 18, 2003 1:18 PM
It depends on what you mean by "inferior." It suits my needs fine, and is easy for me to use. I have never really been into all the technical stuff.
Posted by: Saedin at June 18, 2003 2:01 PM
in·fe·ri·or
adj.
1. Low or lower in order, degree, or rank
2.
a. Low or lower in quality, value, or estimation
b. Second-rate; poor
Posted by: Jake at June 18, 2003 2:10 PM
Heh, yes, I know inferior means. I simply meant in what respect, as in web browsing, e-mail, and such. It's really not that important though, everyone is entitled to their opinion. "We're all individuals" as my friend used to say...constantly...
Posted by: Saedin at June 18, 2003 2:22 PM
Yeah you see for web surfing AOL channels all of the traffic through their proxy servers so it is much slower than a normal ISP expecially for dial up. And for email AOL has been either selling their email accounts to spammers or not doing enough to protect their customers from being harvested by spammers.
Posted by: Jake at June 18, 2003 2:26 PM
Saedin, what does AOL give you that you can't get better and cheaper elsewhere?
Posted by: Randall at June 18, 2003 8:24 PM
Isn't this a #9?
Certainly smells like one...
Posted by: wonker at June 19, 2003 5:51 AM
Sorry I am male. I'll leave #9 up to you.
Posted by: Jake at June 19, 2003 5:57 AM
How about #34: Arguments over the merits of AOL? Yeesh. AOL is a product, much like gasoline and spam fritters. If someone wants to use it, that's their business.
Although I will say that I am rarely surprised when some person sending me a "WHY D U HAET AMERCIA ADN LUV TEH SADAM? U R STUPD ADN U CANT SPEL RITE. I WANT YOU WOULD DIEY" flame is using AOL to do it.
Posted by: Evilninja at June 19, 2003 3:26 PM
Once again I must thank you propper for making me an exception. I never pretend to be a pin up. well some may see me that way, but ya know they have special interests. It's an honor to be mentioned!

We need AOL just like we need WALMART, MCDONALDS and OPRAH. It's there for people who don't want to exert enough effort to think for themselves, shop differently or get too deep into computer technology.
Not everyone needs to master the world-wide interweb and I applaud AOL because it helps senior citizens facilitate processes like: send and recieve email and casually surf a cleased-internet with big buttons, happy faces and of course "you've got mail!".

Beautiful list, I remember when I typed up something like this... it got kinda long though so I trashed it - and realized I hate about over 50% of the trash online. WAY over 50%... I have yet to finish my site... urgh... I bet some bitchy web-clique owner can whip one up in a night. Why so quick? Cause it SUCKS
Posted by: Ana at August 20, 2003 4:29 PM
Nice, most of those are things i hate about the net too. Some sites actually do need the money they ask for though, such as http://www.helponthe.net/. Personally i think that the blogs are just a waste of space on web-providers. Ive found that google toolbar really is the best for popups. I also used to get alot of those chain letters from people but since maybe last june ive stopped getting them.

Well I pay for my blog. not that much but I am constantly turning down people wanting to advertise here.
I would rather use a web-browser that does not suck as much as IE. That is why I am a Mozilla user.
