Review : Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu TG-16 and NES

I haven't done any old school reviews in a really long time so I thought I would review one of the lesser know but kick ass games

JackyChanActionKungFu1.gifJackie Chan's Action Kung Fu Kicks ASS

This game predates all major western knowledge of Jackie Chan but he was one of the biggest stars of Asia when Hudson Soft made this game in 1991.
This game came out for the NEC PC Engine in Japan (Called the Turbo Grafx-16 in the US) but it never was officially released in the US except for the NES Version that is the Nintendo Famicom for all you cats in Japan. This game is not really based on any particular Jackie Chan movie but it is a combination of theme from his period comedies like Drunken Master and Project A. The game is a platform action game that is pretty fun and nicely rounded out. JackyChanActionKungFu3.gifIt has catchy music that sound like the happy Cantonese scores that you would find in an old Jacky Chan movie. The graphics are lighthearted action comedy and the caricature and moves are pure Jacky. My favorite pose is when you have landed on some spikes and he jumps up in the air grabbing his butt in a very slapstick Jackyism. Usually when ever a video game company tries to make a game out of an action movie or comic it sucks 99% of the time but this is one of the rare exceptions. The NES version is good but it just can't hold a candle to the graphics and music of the PC Engine version but it is still fun and delivers the exact same enjoyable game play.

If I were a software publisher I would aquire the rights to Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu and commission a translation of it to Gameboy Advance.

Hudson Soft has made some truly great 2d games such as Bonk and Bomberman but they made a game that is worthy of the quality that one can expect from them.

The PC Engine/TG-16 version can be found in the Classicgaminc.com Vault on this page.
